A fuzzy control system is a control system based on fuzzy logic, which is a mathematical system that makes decisions using human reasoning processes. This book presents an introductory-level exposure to two of the principal uses for fuzzy logic—identification and control. Drawn from the author's lectures presented in a graduate-level course over the past decade, this volume serves as a holistically suitable single text for a fuzzy control course, compiling the information often found in several different books on the subject into one.

Starting with explanations of fuzzy logic, fuzzy control, and adaptive fuzzy control, the book introduces the concept of expert knowledge, which is the basis for much of fuzzy control. From there, the author covers:

• Basic concepts of fuzzy sets such as membership functions, universe of discourse, linguistic variables, linguistic values, support, a-cut, and convexity

• Both Mamdani and Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems, showing how an effective controller can be designed for many complex nonlinear systems without mathematical models or knowledge of control theory while also suggesting several approaches to modeling of complex engineering systems with unknown models

• How PID controllers can be made fuzzy and why this is useful

• Position-form and incremental-form fuzzy controllers

• How nonlinear systems can be modeled as fuzzy systems in several forms

• How fuzzy tracking control and model reference control can be realized for nonlinear systems using parallel distributed techniques

• The estimation of nonlinear systems using the batch least squares, recursive least squares, and gradient methods

• The creation of direct and indirect adaptive fuzzy controllers

Fuzzy Control and Identification is intended for seniors and first-year graduate students, and is suitable for any engineering department. No knowledge specific to any particular branch of engineering is required, and no knowledge of electrical, chemical, or mechanical systems is necessary to read and understand the material.

About the Author
John H. Lilly, PhD, is a professor in the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville. His research interests are nonlinear and adaptive control, fuzzy identification and control, positive/negative fuzzy systems, pneumatic muscle actuators, and robotics. In addition to his twenty-eight years of teaching experience, Dr. Lilly has written more than fifty refereed journal and conference articles, book chapters, invited scholarly lectures, and seminars.

concise descriptions of fuzzy ideas and applications

Lily offers the reader a concise introduction to the use of fuzzy sets in control systems. The text assumes some previous acquaintance with the basic ideas of control systems theory. It explicitly affirms that fuzzy control is best suited when the systems are nonlinear. Now a reader who has already dealt with those systems could suggest that if a model of that nonlinear system is made, then perhaps it could be used in a control loop without any fuzzy concepts. But the text points out that often no such model is made. Possibly due to the complexity of the system. And even when a nonlinear model has been constructed, it might be [and probably is] an approximation to the underlying reality. So even in this case, there is scope for a fuzzy approach to be useful, where it keys off human expert knowledge and might not require much modelling.

From a modular perspective, chapter 3 is useful in showing how to go from an input of precise ['crisp'] values of some independent variable to fuzzy sets, which are then used in a controller that makes fuzzy intermediate output. This is then defuzzified into precise dependent output values. Later chapters expand upon this, by looking more closely at how the controller functions.

The book is directed at a senior level undergraduate readership, and furnishes problem sets in each chapter to this ends. The level of maths is moderately complex. The idea of using a transfer function should already be familiar to the reader, along with some matrix algebra. The overt use of probability theory is minimal.

The book makes the choice of Matlab, as a programming toolkit, and Matlab example code is offered in the appendix. A reader who prefers another toolkit [Mathematica, say] should be able to manually translate the source code into equivalent code of that toolkit. So don't take the choice of Matlab as being unduly restrictive.

A Very Readable Introduction for Fuzzy Controls

This a good introduction into Fuzzy logic Controllers for an applications controls engineer. It is a complete text book with good practical examples. The book is well written and easy to understand. In fact I am considering redesigning the early week of the controls course I teach to use this presentation of the Mamdani Controller as it does not need an extensive controls background beyond basic definitions and demonstrates what we are attempting to accomplish with a control system. Takagi Sugeno systems are discussed but from a practical application rather than mathematical theory. I highly recommend this book to engineers that want an initial introduction to Fuzzy Control Systems.

A superb and beautifully written book.

This book received major awards from both the modern language association (MLA) and the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. Scholarship at its finest

This is the best piece of literary criticism I have read on a Russian author, and definitely one of the best pieces in lit studies in general. Greenleaf is sophisticated yet remarkably clear and persuasive. And the book is not just useful for readers of Pushkin; I would argue that any lit student should read some of this, to get a sense of how genre figures into literary analysis. I loved it.

A fascinating tale of low budget movie-making.

I'm Jason Peters, the actor who plays Karn-Dag, one of the Cavemen in Dinosaur Valley Girls. I give it a 5-star rating because it is a blow-by-blow education in the how-to of making a good movie with an extremely small amout of money. It includes the full original script with footnotes explaining all the changes that had to be made during filming, in order to keep within the budget of time and money. Also details conflicts and compromises, such as the actresses who decided NOT to be filmed topless after signing binding contracts (is there a pun here?) Director Glut writes very well. He is a prolific author who gives a humorous account of the creation of his first full-length motion picture, including how to raise production money from unusual sources, and how to make a low budget look MUCH bigger. Lots of color and B/W photos, and the girls are GORGEOUS!

Clever wit in the style you would only find under the Snicket name

Think of this book as an advice book Snicket-style. Each page has a quote on it pertaining to family, love, work, school, death, and other universal topics. Some of the quotes are just silly and others are outlandishly clever, as would be expected from a Lemony Snicket book. No, it isn't a story about the Baudelaires or Mr. Snicket's life, but it does contain some of the best quotes in A Series of Unfortunate Events along with other original ones. These are the lines that you would be frantically flipping through every book of A Series of Unfortunate Events to find because they are so brilliant, but you simply can't remember the correct page number. One of the more memorable ones is the beautiful quote about the death of a loved one that was first found in The Reptile Room. Therefore, I find it very convenient to have all of these witticisms together in one easy-to-scroll-through book.

It begins with a short and ironically tragic story about a woman searching for knowledge, and the rest of the book contains the sad, yet brutally honest knowledge that she was never able to find. Each page has a message that you probably weren't expecting, and I guarrantee that whoever reads this book will find at least one of the quotes to be brilliant. It's a very good book to read if you are down and are seeking wisdom that won't give you false hope or advice that won't actually work.

I'm so glad that I finally got the chance to read this book after so many years! Although, it's hard to say it's much of a book rather than a collection of witty quotations and thoughts told in classic Lemony Snicket fashion - funny, but cutting harshly through to the point. Despite being a collection of "bitter truths," there's something comforting about the eloquent way Snicket is able to reveal them to us. The circumstances might be unfortunate and lonely, but you are most definitely not alone (especially if you've brought a book, or the experiences of a book with you).

I'll be going back to this one more times than I can imagine in the future.

I got this for four dollars used and it was in excellent shape. Read through it all in under an hour and it's quite entertaining. I don't think it has high re-read value but the quotes are very truthful and fun, so for that reason, I think it's worth buying

Great book to focus your attention on designing for a purpose

While this book series might suggest that this is the most basic of how to write HTML pages, it is much, much more than that. Instead, its an excellent 231pg book and how to design a GREAT website, with details about many essential aspects and brief summaries of how to do other, more advanced or exceptional aspects (e.g. how to ad a survey to your site).

The book doesn't start with how to write HTML code. It starts with how to think about and to DESIGN a web site. To think about a web site as a tool, and thus what goal is to be address thru the use of that tool. As such it emphasizes planning user interaction & navigation, as well as what makes for good writing for the web.

Its not a long nor an exhaustive book, and not a reference for coding. But it does one thing very well in my judgment. That is to guide its readers toward a well conceived, coherent understanding of their own purposes in having a web site, and to guide them in employing the tools of the web to effect those purposes.

Worthy of the limelight

I have just finished reading "Fierce Convictions -- The Extraordinary Life of Hannah More: Poet, Reformer, Abolitionist". I knew a little about Hannah More (1745 - 1833) prior to reading this book, particularly that she was one of the Clapham Sect http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/119725/Clapham-Sect, with William Wilberforce and other abolitionists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in England. But "Fierce Convictions" makes clear that her brilliant work as an abolitionist is only a small portion of the story of Hannah More's life.

Karen Swallow Prior has done a marvelous job of writing a thorough, balanced biography of Hannah More, who accomplished so much in her lifetime that it's mind boggling. She was certainly a celebrity in her day, and deservedly so. In her long and prolific life, Ms. More wrote acclaimed poetry, plays and a novel, started a school for women, spoke persuasively to the upper classes of England about moral reform, and reached out to the poor of her area by starting Sunday schools, which were vehicles for teaching literacy. One should remember that Hannah More did all these things at a time in history when being a woman was a liability, and to be seen doing any public work at all was considered unseemly. Astounding.

Dr. Prior has given us a wealth of finely researched information about Ms. More's successes and charming ways, but she also tells us about her failures and her blind spots, thus helping to form a more complete and believable picture of the subject. We are also kept aware throughout the book of the historical and cultural period in which Hannah More lived, which for 21st century minds, had some very perplexing customs. As far as the readability of the book, there are quotes from writers of the mid-18th century that are challenging, but Hannah More's life is so interesting, and Dr Prior's writing is so engaging, that it is worth the reader's time to work through those passages.

I believe that this excellent book should be on the reading list of every young woman. I have asked our local library to purchase a copy for their shelves, and will encourage them to include it on the list of suggested books for Women's History Month, too. Hannah More's life is truly inspirational, and I think It's time to put her back in the limelight.

Well crafted historical documentary

Karen Prior does an excellent job of showing how the media (in those days pamphlets and plays) have an effect on the public at large. We always hear of Wilbur Wilberforce abolishing slave trade in England, but do not realize the background help he had. A very good read.

Realistic yet still superior advice

Lyle consistently delivers: no drivel, no wasted space, no fluff- just easy to read and understand information that doesn't patronize the reader.

This is a terrific (dare I say it?) Lifestyle book. It is less about one particular way of dieting (though it covers several methods) than about how to maintain weight loss and health for life. I would consider it absolutely a must-have for anyone concerned with fitness and weight loss.

Wonderful Book

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The author has a writing style that made this book both very easy and fun to read. I recommend to book to anyone who has ever failed a diet because they were too rigid in their ways, and to all dieters in general. The book provides excellent information that can be used by anyone. I suggest buying Lyle McDonald's other books as well, they are all quality work from an excellent author.

Let me anoint you: Lyle Mc Donald is a bit of an Ass.…but as a former fat girl, fitness business owner, and a woman he is who I go to and recommend for all dietary information. He knows his ish… if you are a Mormon, who hates foul language or can't handle the truth, buy a book from someone one on the Biggest Loser with a catchy title and false promises...
BUT: If you want just enough science to understand but not hurt your brain about Fat loss this book is for you. If you want a guide that gives you flexibility in your diet while actually having a life, this book is for you. If you enjoy dry humor and want someone to give it to you straight with no chaser, Lyle is your guy. He injects his personality into this easy how- to guide. The book gives you the tools for being lean for life. And that is, well... its priceless. Buy this book.

A great collaborative effort!

This is a wonderful collaboration of some of the most respected and experienced people working in the field of social entrepreneurship. It covers a wide range of issues and does so in more detail than I have seen in other publications on the field. In particular, I was pleased to see a chapter on legal/tax issues and one on pricing - two topics that many organizations have a lot of questions about, and are often not emphasized in publications. This is definitely a good addition to your collection if you run a non-profit engaged in earned income activities, or if you interact with such organizations.
