Eerie continues to shine
By Dean Wirth
Eerie continues to excel in horror, fantasy, western, historical and dystopian future stories. We open with The Spook in the first issue, a story of an African slave that was killed by slave traders only to be given new life by Native American Shamen cursed to wreak havoc. This series ends in an excellent long entry drawn by Jose Oritz, who thankfully is well represented in this volume. Paul Neary offers the excellent Hunter II(itself a mix of science fiction an mythology), man this guy could draw. Also Gonzolo Mayo offers El Cid, an ornately drawn tale of the ancient warrior that has dragons and ogres and witches and temptresses. Jose Bea offers a bizarre fantasy that only he could draw. The covers by Sanjulian and Kelly are top notch (the dust jacket is Jedediah Pan and his demons, a western with the Eerie stamp of medieval oddity. This strip is also drawn by Oritz, and is one of the best Eerie had to offer; Bernie Wrightson offers full page drawing of Cousin Eerie that are breathtaking in detail and artistry, he also co draws a story. All in all an excellent volume.

Great Diversification!
By Jason Kerr
Anything goes in this archive. This means that you never know where Warren will take you and that's a great thing. The book opens with the conclusion of the Coffin series. The 2nd Hunter series continues and it was a great idea to pair an exterminator robot to the story line. You have two heroes to root for and you are really hoping that neither one dies but that's good storytelling when you care about the characters. This series also concludes. Slaughter 5 faked me out completely. Gerry Boudreau's storyline is set in a very grim, futuristic setting and the ending is not what I expected. El Cid is wonderful sword & sorcery and Mayo's artwork is fantastic. I have to force myself to take the time to observe each panel because there is just so much detail in them. Following El Cid is a fun Sci-Fi story called "Oogie and the junkers." This was drawn by Maroto. Everything I have already mentioned is just in the first issue. Other highlights throughtout this archive is the Goblin, Irving & the Devil Pie, Pooter & the Magic Man and Mordecai Moondog. Moondog has a lot of dialogue (written by Bill Dubay) and because of this, Maroto's art plays back up to the book type story. It is interesting, though. The fun continues with "the Demons of Jeremiah Cold." You will meet "the Freaks" and in color, too! Jose Bea gives us "Tales of Peter Hypnos". These stories take you into imaginary worlds as observed by a child and if you think this doesn't belong in Eerie, you're wrong because anything goes. That's why this archive is so good, it's because it is well balanced with horror, fantasy, science fiction, adventure and humor. There's much more to say. The artwork is great as usual and the cover artwork by Sanjulian and Ken Kelly is top notch. If you like Budd Lewis and Bill Dubay, they write most of the stories. This archive has it all so go out and add it to your collection.

keeps gettin' better
By John m
I'll keep buying the EERIEs. It is a once in a lifetime event. These type of magazines won't be repeated(possible exception of Blokes Terrible Terror). The art and writing is the best. No cartoony art. I'm not much on the fantasy stories like El Cid,but,it still is a worthy piece.
