About the Author

Dr. Sandy Furterer currently works in VP Business Process Engineering at JPMorgan Chase. She manages the Business Process Improvement and Project Management department in the Mortgage Banking Controllers area. She also designs and deploys the business process improvement program, facilitates cross-functional process improvement initiatives, and also develops a framework for prioritizing process improvement initiatives.

Dr. Furterer developed and deployed the Enterprise Performance Excellence Center program for two hospitals in south Florida which facilitated hospital-wide operational improvements across clinical and non-clinical processes.

1000 years later, buddhism had degenerated into philosophical nihilism. Adi Shankara defeated the buddhist nihilists and Dharma was again restored.

Fantastic for learning developmental bio

I'm a biology graduate student with a physics background, so I bought this book to try to learn developmental bio. This seems to be the most prominent development textbook, and I can see why. I've been very pleased with it. It explains things very clearly and is written extremely well. The pictures are beautiful and well explained. The author includes some interesting science history, but not so much that it feels overwhelming or off-topic. It's clear that he's spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to present the material in order to teach it from scratch, assuming minimal prior biology knowledge. He doesn't go into the details of the Central Dogma and molecular biology because that's the realm of other textbooks, so it's good to know some of that to start with, but that can be learned easily from other sources. It also has a lot of great details for people who already have a pretty solid understanding of development, so this is a good book for anyone to have if they study development. Another great thing about this book is that it's very up-to-date. This edition came out in 2013, and it has a lot of citations to studies as late as 2011 and 2012. Biology changes fast and it's important to get an up-to-date textbook, and fortunately this book seems to get a new edition every few years. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Dense and awkward read

The language was stiff (it is a textbook after all), and it didn't help the format focused very heavily on individual studies. While referencing actual published studies provided very concrete examples and put real-world applications of theory into perspective, at times it detracted from actually conveying the main concept in a comprehensible way. The online supplement is riddled with typographical errors ranging from "tolymerase chain reaction" to entire paragraphs being duplicated.

It's not unreadable, but it was unpleasant. 3/5

Cats with Character to Make as Needlepoint

Cats are notoriously difficult animals to capture in art, and perhaps that is why cat lovers, like me, are so enchanted by a well-drawn picture of one. Having said that, needlepoint versions of cats which really capture their personalities are even more difficult to find. Julie Halser, a British needlepoint and cross stitch designer has managed to give us the treat of beautifully designed cats in her 1998 book, Needlepoint Cats.

Being a cat lover herself, Hasler abses each design on an actual cat. Zoe's Favorite Toy, for example, shows a black and white cat with a toy mouse being held to the ground by one paw. My favorite design of all, Jo Jo, shows a massive grey British shorthair, against a mostly purple patchwork design. Jo Jo looks exactly like one of my cats, even down to the serene face.

Another wonderful aspect of Hasler's designs is her way with backgrounds. No acres of single color backgrounds here; the designs include fields of flowers, a celestial background, Morris-style greenery, stained glass, and oriental rugs.

Designs in many sizes are included here as well from the tops of small trinket boxes to shaped pillows and rugs. One of my favorites is Peeping Tom a small round picture of a cats face. Framed with a wide mat, you can almost imagine this cat is looking through a peephole at you.

The book is clearly planned by a stitcher with exceptionally large, clear color charts, with a color key on the same page. The color numbers are given for the recommended thread. Along with an introductory chapter on basic techniques, there are helpful listings in the back of suppliers and a US/UK glossary to help with "translation."

From start ot finish, this is an outstanding project book.

Cat Lovers' Needlepoint

If you have at least intermediate needlepointing experience, you won't have any problems. However, beginners beware! The instructions for working the tent stitch on page 11 are appallingly incorrect. That aside, the charts are easy to read with a combination of color and symbols. Most of the backgrounds are repeats and would be easy to substitute for each other. The cats themselves are beautiful. Recommended for experienced needleworkers.

Julie Hasler has captured the heart of the cat lover. When I look at needlepoint books the first thing I look for is a design of a cat, and to think here is a book with no cutesy cats. Each design reminds one of some cat one has known. The only problem is deciding which to make first. Keep doing more books, Julie Hasler!

I just get it. She speaks my language.

I am 59 years old and have just lost everything I own. I am starting again with such faith and confidence, which is very different to how I was before I read this book. She has literally saved me and set me on a new wondrous voyage. I have lived my life, brought up a daughter from a a very young age, had many long term relationships, been battered emotionally by life, yet I survived through sheer grit and determination never taking the time to look deep to heal wounds and to set boundries. The recession in South Africa over the last 3 years affected my business and I made some pretty stupid decisions and got involved with the wrong people. After a protracted court case which I won, the company went into voluntary liquidation which meant I lost everything. Because I know and believe that I am in exactly the right place at the right time, I looked very deeply at what caused this situation and why. It started with me and ends with me. What lessons I learned! I wake every morning with a prayer on my lips, energy to get through the day regardless of banks and creditors phoning me. Marianne, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for reminding me that God is my partner, that I am protected and that things can change in an instant when I ask. Marianne's best yet

In these difficult economic times Marianne Williamson's new book, "The Law of Divine Compensation: On Work, Money, and Miracles" is a refreshing reminder that God's love is the true source of our abundance.

"Finance is just one of many areas where an increasingly obsolete, materially based worldview is proving to be inadequate to the challenges of the times in which we live," Williamson writes in the preface of her book. The author's message of God's unconditional love trumping worldly possessions resonated with me. I found myself underlying passages in page after page for future reference (the most words I've highlighted in any book I've read this year).

Williamson is not preaching to us from the mountain top. Similar to her writing style in other books, she is very vulnerable with her own struggles - this time in the financial realm. In "Divine Compensation" she tells a story of how she lost $10,000 early in her speaking career due to poor event planning. "Oh Daddy," she recalls telling her father, "It was such a bomb!" Williamson describes how this personal misfortune taught her a lesson. After consoling words from her father, she relates how she chose to think about this incident was the key to transforming it to positive experience. She could either see it "as proof of utter failure and doom or as an opportunity to forgive myself and attract a miracle." Williamson, in being open with her own shortcomings, gives the reader a sense of being counseled by a friend, rather than being lectured at by a "know it all" spiritual guru.

I wasn't expecting to read about the value of forgiveness in a book about work and money, but according to Williamson a forgiving spirit is essential in attracting our own good. "The universe knows if you were hurt and is already on the case to make right whatever wrong occurred," she writes. "Your anger, if it lingers, throws a wrench in the machine of the miraculous universe." In her view, "no deviation from love - on your part or anyone else's - can keep the universe from its divine intention that your life be one of fullness and joy."

I also liked the prayers Williamson included in the book. Prayers to transform the reader's consciousness. Can you relate to this one as I did?:

"Dear God, I feel myself falling into the hole of self-pity, self-obsession, and negativity.
I know I shouldn't think this way, but I'm afraid and I cannot stop. Please replace my thoughts with Yours, dear God. I am willing to see myself and all things differently. Please send me the miracle of new eyes and ears, that I might know my greater good. Amen."

I copied this and other prayers from the book and plan refer to them often during my own times of doubt and struggle.

"The Law of Divine Compensation" is the best book from Marianne Williamson I have ever read (and I have read a few, including her landmark work "Return To Love"). "You are not merely a being of the material world; you are a being of unlimited spirit," she writes. "And in spirit there is no lack. You are not lacking, just because your circumstances are." Williamson's message of God's love being our true source of fulfillment was a comfort to me, and I think it will be to you, too.

Life changing!

Over the course of reading this book (only a few days because I couldn't put it down!), I've witnessed not only a change in my thoughts and attitude, but also an improvement in my circumstances already! I've been out of work for 6 months, forced out due to debilitating depression and anxiety caused by an insane workload and toxic environment. I had to give up what I had once thought was the job of my dreams, with a great paycheck to boot, and have been deeply struggling to heal and get back on my feet. Finally feeling well enough now to jump back up on the work horse, the fear of not knowing where I'm going or what I'm supposed to do has been looming over my head. The tedious and grueling task of applying and interviewing for jobs, waiting for good news but only getting rejections, will make most people doubt themselves and feel like there's no light at the end of the tunnel. On top of it, I have a massive amount of debt that I cannot pay--it's a struggle just to get the rent paid and keep a roof over my head. The pressure and stress has been eating me alive. Thankfully, in doing much self-help reading to improve my illness as well as continue my ongoing spiritual development, I came across this book. After the first night of reading and applying the mindfulness strategies, I woke up to a voicemail from a prospective employer! I continued to read and apply--the next day I had more voicemails and a bunch of e-mails! I'm amazed at how quickly the universe responded to my diligent prayers and meditation--not because I didn't believe, just simply in awe of the miracles unfolding before me! I know that my life has so much potential, and I know that God directed me to this book. What a blessing!

If more women would read this book there would be a lot less marriage breakups!

I married smart women, some thirty years ago, Christmas, kids a stressful project at work, I was being a SOB. "Wife stops and says" Kids wait here, I need to take care of your father, we are going up stairs, ; I am think big fight, when we get to the bedroom; "wife says" Pull down your pants you are getting the hairbrush. Short story, I could not talk her out of it, it was the triple darn, "wife says" you are not man enough to take it. She lights me up!

It was all gone; when that pains outside equals the pain of the stress inside you it disappears. I was a new loving husband, no more did I needing that drink after work, no more freaking out if something went wrong with the project in work, a clear head, and a sore butt that lasted for about a week and than some!

A women need to understand it is not just about the man but the boy inside him. I truly believe it is in our genes. We have a twin 5 year old boy and girl grandchildren, and yes we have to watch them! The girl, the time out thing works, the boy, maybe it is the need to challenge authority but he loves to push my wife's buttons till she whacks his butt, then he is ok! I don't know, you can take your pick, need of structure, has to challenge authority or asking for attention, or a desire for corporal punishment but there is that mischief child inside us, ("Which by the way means end badly") that bad boy inside us that has to play till someone corrects us, except when we do it as men we do really stupid things!

So, what if no one stops us?

For me it is like having a toothache and knowing you need root canal and hoping you can find a dentist to take care of it, either you pull it out yourself or you do something really stupid like drinking, cheating!
Yes I have been there, looking and even trying to find ways to hurt myself. That stress, guilt, it hurts!

To me it is akin to therapy.

To add to the author book, his suggestion is making a list, you cross that line and you get it. That means the bad child has to cross that line. Not to mention it is kind of fun toeing that line! It is that child inside you!

Our solution was if it got that bad for me I would simply take the brush out of hiding and put it where she could see it. If it disappeared I knew she agreed. If she on the other hand took it out it was a warning and if I didn't put it away, that it was my way of saying I agreed otherwise I heeded her warning. There where time I would put it way and it showed up the next day, I knew I was not getting out of it!

Part of the process is that feeling of having to go for that root canal and waiting in the waiting room to be next, waiting till that day came was a little game she enjoyed playing.

Understand it wasn't like you did this every month perhaps a couple times a year. Plus there were also those two or three shots that came as warnings.

Now long we have been together, 40 years!

To all women, you fell in love with not only the adult in us but with that child as well.
