An Unvarnished Look at One of America's Great Entrepreneurs

Go into McDonald's today, and you see a complex, well-operated business system operated by ordinary people. That is impressive in and of itself. What is even more impressive is to understand the roots of how this business was established, which you can do by reading this entertaining and revealing book.
Unlike most people who write about themselves and their businesses, Ray Kroc was pretty candid about the problems he had, the people who gave him a hard time, the mistakes he made, and his personal life. That makes this book very valuable to those who want to understand what entrepreneurship is all about.
As an adjunct to reading this book, I suggest that you also visit the McDonald's museum near O'Hare airport in Ray Kroc's first store. There are notes there about all of the problems that he had to solve over the years, many of which are described in the book.
Ray Kroc did not invent the original McDonald's concept, but what he franchised and eventually bought from the McDonald brothers was not yet a real business system. For example, when he first tried to duplicate the french fries that were so famous in San Bernardino, California, his french fries turned to mush. It turned out that the storage methods used by the McDonald brothers aged and dehydrated the potatoes a bit so that they could fry up nicely. Kroc had to invest in finding a process for doing that outside of the near-desert climate of San Bernardino.
The McDonald's system that we see today is the creation of Kroc's attention to detail, appreciation for consumer value, ability to solve problems, taking calculated risks that he could not afford to lose, and attracting talented people into the system. The book gives you a great sense of what that was like. Anyone starting an e-business today will be going through many of the same trials and tribulations.
The book is filled with wonderful stories about McDonald's and the people of McDonald's.
I have a special fondness for the subject since I grew up about a mile from the first McDonald's in San Bernardino, and have been eating their hamburgers now for over 50 years. It is truly awe-inspiring to me to see what has been accomplished from such humble beginnings.
Clearly, this book is a stallbuster for you in business. Kroc was 52 when he became interested in McDonald's. He had no special skills in restaurants. (The closest he came was in selling Lily cups and milk shake machines to restaurants, lunch counters, and drive-ins.) He had relatively little money to invest compared to the size of the opportunity. He ran into many obstacles that could have broken most businesses. Yet he just put his head down, and kept moving forward on the most important things. You can learn a lot from his determination.
Good luck with using this example to create a new set of practices for business that exceed what anyone has ever accomplished before!

Kroc on Kroc for Kroc

This is the autobiography of one of the great entrepreneurs of the 20C. If only for that, it is worth the read of anyone who is interested in understanding business or the fast-food industry. For all his earthy common sense and lack of formal education, the system that Kroc set up can only be described as a work of genius. Afterall, MCdonald's at the moment has surpassed Coca Cola as the most recognized brand in the world: it serves nearly 45 million people every day, commands unparalelled influence in every related industry, and often serves as the symbol of the US itself.

THe great strength of this book is that you get Kroc's view of what makes himself tick: he devoted himself relentlessly to a single business purpose within the capitalist system, was open to suggestions from talent that he cultivated regarding that purpose, and adapted it as he needed to thrive. It is a remarkable story of a man who re-made himself many times, and began what became the McDonald's corporation in his 50s! You simply have to respect what he accomplished at a time when most men would have given up.

The pillars of his business model are well known: 1) it is more an ecosystem of separate companies that grow together with long-term bonds of trust and the highest standards of professional conduct; 2) it pursues operational efficiency while refusing to compromise safety and cleanliness; 3) it is adept at finding innovations pioneered by both its suppliers and owner-operators and then disseminating them into the system; 4) it sticks to its core competency - hamburger and fries - and with few exceptions listens to consumers. That is about it, really, in an idealist version, but it explains why the company's many competitors failed to grow as big and fast.

During the process, furthermore, Kroc did not go for making a quick buck - by selling franchise rights for a killing or gouging his owner-operators by monopolising what supplies they had to buy from him - and focused instead on treating his suppliers and owner-operators fairly, reasoning that if they could thrive, so would he. No other fast-food chain did that.

Of course, as an autobio, Kroc focuses far more on the bright side of what he has done. He does not ask himself any hard questions and comes off, not surprisingly, as distrusting of the motives of his critics as well as the legitimate concerns of many intellectuals and political activists. While open-minded, we see, he was myopically focused on refining his business model and hence unaware of his impact on the wider society.

Moreover, except for some quotes and quirky details, the business issues are also covered better in McDonald's Behind the Arches, by John F. Love. But then, both are authorised versions of the McDonald's view. The reader will need to look elsewhere for more thoughtful critiques.

Recommended. The curious reader can get a lot from this book.

The Story Behind the Golden Arches

Ray Kroc's success story is quite a record of persistence and achievement. He didn't invent the McDonald's chain (as many erroneously believe) but he knew a winner when he saw one and he negotaited to buy the business. He truly believed that McDonald's could be a huge, global operation if it was promoted right and run with an emphasis on quality, customer service, cleanliness, and value. These four attributes made the acronym "QSCV", and it was something that Ray Kroc preached to his people every single day.

Ray Kroc shows his confidence throughout the book, not just with business, but also in his personal life. He pursued his business dreams with unmatched vigor, and he was equally determined to reach his personal goals. His relentless courtship of Joni, his one true love, is one of the highlights of the book. It's fun listening to Kroc spill his heart out, telling the reader all sorts of details about his personal life. He was absolutely ga- ga over his beloved Joni, and he shows no embarrassment in admitting his feelings. Here was a man who had the world in his hands, a senior citizen who was head of a large corporation, and yet he was completely, hopelessly in love and willing to give it all up for his number one lady. He was having trouble sleeping, and couldn't concentrate on work anymore. He was like a starry- eyed teenager, always in a daydream- like state, fantasizing about the woman he loved. He was prepared to do virtually anything to capture her heart.

Kroc was an outspoken and egotistical man, and these personality traits pop up throughout the book. He blew his top several times, when things didn't go his way or when someone would make a negative comment about McDonald's, and he could often be quite profane and a little vile. This was true in his other business ventures as well like when his San Diego Padres baseball team (he was the owner) wasn't performing up to par. There was one episode, in 1974, when the Padres played miserably and Kroc let them know exactly how bad they were. It was the home opener, and at its conclusion, Kroc grabbed the public address microphone and harshly criticized the players for such a lousy performance. The media jumped all over the incident, but Kroc was undeterred. He gave no apologies, feeling that the team was letting down the fans and deserved to be chewed out.

One place where Kroc didn't let his ego get in the way with smart business was with the naming of the restaurant. He decided to keep the original name, McDonald's, rather than using his own name. This was a wise move, especially considering Ray's last name. Would you want to visit a restaurant that was named "Kroc's"? Just the name alone would make me lose my appetite and it was a wise business decision to keep the original name intact.

This book shows occasional dabs of humor and some good writing. Kroc and editor Robert Anderson both deserve credit for making the book more enjoyable to read with its easy- flowing style. It's not awash in humor, but there's enough to help keep the book interesting. One criticism that I have of this book, however, is the layout; specifically, the fact that the chapters have no titles, which is inexcusable. Titles are helpful for reference purposes, and they should have been included. If Ray Kroc didn't realize this, then the editor should have. Other than that, the book is well- written and partically error free from a grammatical standpoint.

Kroc tells his story with gusto and pride. You can tell that he's very happy with the McDonald's company and gleaming with satisfaction over the way his personal life and professional life have turned out. This book was written in 1977, and much has changed since then, both with McDonald's and with fast- food in general. There are far more choices in fast- food today, like submarine sandwiches, which had not yet achieved a substantial share of the market back when Ray Kroc wrote this book. It's hard to say how Kroc would have reacted to these modern- day changes in the marketplace, but I'm sure he would have welcomed the challenge.

Many people don't prefer McDonald's food, but the man behind the arches, Ray Kroc, is a person who deserves respect. His tenacity was unrelenting, his confidence was unmatched, and his drive to succeed was unstoppable. He took a small, roadside restaurant in California and transformed it into the world's largest fast- food chain. "Grinding it Out" is a testament to the difference that one man can make when he has guts and determination to be the best.

Your next assignment is for "Fakebusters" investigating a phoney "instant weight loss" machine, where you use what you already learned about forces to work out the difference between weight and mass and master the normal force. Being the physics consultant on a computer game helps you to consolidate what you know about forces, then you discover energy conservation while working out a way to lift the sword in the stone using physics.

Head First Problem Solving Tips

Don't try to memorize! That's got to be the most important thing. Physics is like a sport — you learn best by doing rather than by memorizing. So the whole book's geared towards learning by doing, through solving problems as you go along.

Start with a sketch, and write down all the values you already know on it. This gets the visual parts of your brain working and gives you a single reference on your page where you've collected together everything you know so far.

Ask: "What's it LIKE"?
Physics is about the world around you, and you already have plenty of experience there. Your sketch may remind you of a scenario you've seen before, or a similar problem you've previously solved, even if the "story" is different.

Don't be afraid to have a go.
The best way to solve a problem is to start it. You won't always see in advance how you're going to work your way through the problem, but as you sketch and write things down you'll often get ideas popping into your head that you can run with.

The memoirs of a great 20th-century and beyond linguist, looking back at a storied career with frank comments on academic life

Born in England in 1939, Robert M. W. Dixon became one of the most productive and widely-respected linguists in the world in the second half of the 20th century and beyond, with the great bulk of his career spent in Australia. There he undertook his first fieldwork journeys among speakers of Aboriginal languages, and he ultimately helped to build a series of legendary linguistics departments and typological research centres in Canberra, Melbourne and now Cairns. I AM A LINGUIST, published in 2010, is his memoirs, a look back at a storied career, with some information on his upbringing, non-linguistic interests, and family life, and his frank views on academia and doing science.

Because fieldwork, i.e. describing hitherto undocumented languages to expand our understanding of what forms human speech can entail, has been central to his activity, Dixon starts the book off by reminiscing of a 24-hour span during a stay among the Jarawara people of the Amazon in the early 1990s. Besides the typical travelogue details like the biting insects and the oppressive heat, he discusses some of the puzzling issues of Jarawara grammar that he had to solve. Thus, he signals to the reader that this kind of hands-on work and the drive to expand one's horizons is what linguistics really means, not just the academic rituals of the university.

We then go back to Dixon's childhood and the book becomes a more conventional chronological account of his life. He describes his upbringing in England, his university education in Oxford and Edinburgh, and how he came to fall in love with Australia. His account of his career proceeds roughly decade by decade, describing in considerable detail not just the academic positions he held and what languages he was working on but -- again -- specific enigmas in the grammar of these languages that he had to conquer at each step. Two chapters discuss his outside interests, namely compiling discographies of old records by African-American blues and gospel artists, and the occasional go at writing a science fiction or detective story.

Dixon writes with the boundless curiosity and sense of wonder of a young man. Only rarely does one detect any of the crotchety tone that one would expect from a man over seventy. That said, he does not mince words, and if he has always been outspoken and unafraid to voice his opinions, retirement seems to have set him even more free. Much of the book consists of his feelings on how the university system in Australia and other countries has gone downhill, with far too much administration overhead, pointless meetings that never end, and tolerance of mediocrity. Some academics he considers fools are referred to at least by pseudonyms, while one (the late Stephen Wurm) comes to seem almost like the author's nemesis. Dixon is also quite adamant that whether one is a student or a faculty member, one has to work hard, well beyond the bounds of the working day into evenings and weekends, eschewing conferences because they usually just waste time that could be spent on study. (It is astounding to this reader that Dixon found time for have any outside interests at all!)

Brill published this in hardback at a price that suggests the prospective market is only university libraries. That is a bit of a shame, but Dixon's intended readership does need some university-level education in linguistics already, as while he often seeks to eschew jargon and present things clearly, the puzzles he presents to the reader can be challenging even for people grounded in the field. I’m not sure this book has the sure re-read value to recommend a purchase, but if you can find this book at an institution near you, it will prove a fun read, and one that might spur you on to greater effort in research.

About the Author

Pingali Venugopal, Associate Director, XLRI, Center for Global Management and Responsible Leadership, and Professor (Marketing), has teaching, industry, consulting, and research experience in the Marketing function in the Indian context for over 33 years. He has done his Post Graduate Programme and Doctorate from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He has been a Marketing Faculty at XLRI, Jamshedpur, since 1994 and the Dean of the Institute from 2004 to 2010. He has also been a Visiting Faculty to leading institutes in India including the Indian Institutes of Management in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Indore and international institutes including American University of Armenia and Educatis University Switzerland. He has taught courses such as Marketing Management, Sales and Distribution Management, Agricultural Input Management, and Marketing Research at these institutes. Prior to joining academics, he has worked in Marketing Department of Coromandel Fertilisers and Nagarjuna Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd for a period of 10 years. While at Coromandel, he was also involved in the launch of their cement brand.

Venugopal’s research and publication cover different marketing topics, and he has authored seven books covering the areas of marketing and Indian economy. His books Sales and Distribution Management: An Indian Perspective and Marketing Management: A Decision Making Approach have been adopted as texts in several business schools including the Indian Institutes of Management. On the invitation of Government of India, he prepared the report on Input Management, State of Indian Farmer―A Millennium study wherein he evaluated the impact of the policy measures on the Indian farmers from Independence to 2000. After the formation of Jharkhand, he was part of the steering committee of the Jharkhand Development Report prepared for the Planning Commission. As part of the report he also prepared the agricultural plan for the newly formed state. He is on the Board of Tata Metaliks, Advisor to Kerzon Consultants, and on the Academic Committee of National Institute like National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, Hyderabad and National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur. He has also been involved as an expert for programs conducted by some agri-business companies such as Zuari, UPL, and PI industries.

Teachers/Parents/All Readers, this is an EXCELLENT read!!

Outstanding!! After teaching for 33 years, it still warms my heart to come across a new book, written for young adults, which will engage both male and female readers equally. I loved the character development, the visuals the author painted for the reader as well as the excellent plot development and twists. When reading I love to be drawn in within the first several pages and Mr. Sullivan was able to grab my full attention which, to me, translates to an excellent read! I highly recommend this book for all young adult readers but why stop there, I believe all readers will enjoy The Orphans. I have encouraged my teacher friends to read and purchase this book for their classroom libraries. I can’t wait for the second book in the Trilogy.

While admittedly not a book I would typically seek out, the Orphans delivered a great story full of witty dialogue, unexpected plot twists and an overall enjoyable story. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun read that is hard to put down. It definitely leaves you wanting more, can't wait for book 2!

What starts off as a small and powerful story of a young teen losing his parents slowly twists into an epic fantasy with the fate of the world (and heaven and hell) at stake. Matthew Sullivan's "Orphans" is a gripping and dynamic story of loss and rebirth that works both as an entertaining YA novel and an allegorical roadmap for teens trying to find themselves in the real world.

I highly recommend this book and would not be surprised to see it on the big screen sometime soon!

A Joyous Departure

This was a great read and well worth stepping out of the usual genre that I read. If it were possible, this world of angels doing good to mere mortals while scaring the perps sh*tless would be where I would like to end up. Had I not been so comfortably seated I would be at the edge of my seat. I never put it down unless I had to and when it was over I wanted to read on. Those are the markings of a great read for me.

It was a great departure from my usual romance novels and would recommend this book without hesitation.

All the best for the sequels which I look forward to with bated breath.

Love it

This book was a fantastic read! It has a quite literally colourful cast of characters, and a plot that moves at a nice pace, while keeping you guessing about what will happen next. I recommend it to fantasy lovers who enjoy angels vs demons stories with a bit of romance thrown in.

Original story with complicated characters, a real page turner

"Fledgling" puts a fresh face on the world of angels and delivers an intriguing blend of romance and Good vs Evil conflict. The pace is just fast enough to keep things exciting but not so much that you get left behind. Katrina Cope's training in martial arts and combat sports results in fight and action scenes that are both intense and realistic.

Fledgling is a generic name assigned to the lead character, more indicative of her status than anything else. She is one of ten nameless, freshly graduated angels, their human names lost forever and their proven names yet to be assigned. They are what they are because their past three lives all ended abruptly and in violence. Now they'll be tasked with protecting those who are what they once were, and punishing the guilty by inserting a conscience into them. If she breaks the rules she'll be placed in the abyss, probably for life.

The story is a real page turner, the kind that will keep you up way past your usual bedtime. I know a lot of people gripe about first person, present tense POV but when it's done right it has a way of putting you directly into the story. I think Cope did a great job on this score and I really enjoyed the way the story flows. Fledgling is a complicated character and as her horrible past is slowly revealed you get a real understanding of why she is the way she is. I am absolutely excited to read the next book and see where this story goes.

Learn to play guitar before a live audience!

Good wholesome dose of Tom Waits fakebook. Plenty of songs, including many new ones from Real Gone and Orphans. Wish there were more Rain Dogs but, hey, I'll take what I can get. Good selection, easy easy to read, excellent binding: survived a few road trips in better condition than me. Recommended for the musically challenged.

Tom Waits Little Black songbook

This book is a very good collection of Tom Waits songs. It contains 80 songs. All of the wonderful lyrics of his songs are included. The format is for instruments that use chords. Their is no individual notes for melody, the chords are positioned over the lyrics where a change is made. The print is small. I use the book with my ukulele. But have also found myself just taking it out to read as a poetry book. Blue Valentine: " She sends me Blue Valentines, All the way from Philadelphia, To mark the anniversary, of someone that I use to be."

Gold, I tell you, pure gold

The only reason it's not 5 stars is that I wish there were more songs. That said, it's a really strong selection. The book is nice and portable, suitable for study in the world underground, flying sardine cans, and candlelit prowls in the dark woods. If you're a Tom Waits fan don't miss this - for the price, it's more than worth it. It even has a little guitar explanation at the opening, so if you want to learn guitar, there is a wealth of easy songs to practice. If you already play an instrument, I found they did a good job at including some slightly more sophisticated material, too.

For those who aren't familiar with Tom Waits, some people do not like his voice at first, so this book may be a good introduction to his lyrics and song structures. I love Tom's voice, and think it suits his songs perfectly, but it can be jarring to some at first, so this book could be a good little device to familiarize yourself with the greatest American songwriter before diving into to his excellent recordings.
