The essays in part I focus on the premises of Lynch's work. his novel reading of large-scale built environments and the notion that the design of an urban landscape should be as meaningful and intimate as the natural landscape. Next, excerpts from Lynch's travel journals reveal his early ideas on how people perceive and interpret their surroundings, ideas that culminated in his seminal work "The Image of the City. This part of the book also presents Lynch's experiments with children and his assessment of environmental-perception research. The examples of both smallscale and large-scale analysis of visual form in part III are followed by three parts on city design. These include Lynch's more theoretical works on complexplanning decisions involving both functional (spatial and structural organization) and normative (how the city works in human terms) approaches, articles discussing the principles that guided Lynchs teaching and practice of city design, and descriptions of Lynch's own projects in the Boston area and elsewhere. The book concludes with essays written late in Lynch's career, fantasy pieces on utopias and offering new design freedoms and scenarios warning of horrifying "cacotopias" to come. Kevin Lynch (1918-1984) studied with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin and later obtained a Bachelor of City Planning degree from MIT. After a long and distinguished career on the faculty of the MIT School of Architecture and Urban Planning, he was named Professor Emeritus of City Planning. Tridib Banerjee is Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Southern California. Michael Southworth is a Professor of Urban Design and Environmental Planning at the University of California at Berkeley.

Transnational thoughts from a human geographer & Latino Veteran of U.S. Army

Lynch (1918-1984), was born in Chicago, IL, raised in NC, and later educated under the tutorage of Frank Lloyd Wright, before leaving to serve overseas with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the Pacific/Southeast Asian Region during World War II (WWII) and returned home to complete undergraduate studies at MIT, served as an urban planner (working in Greensboro, NC), then was asked to return to MIT as a professor. Thus, his work was instrumental in transforming some of the greatest scientific minds when universities in the U.S. accepted professors without doctoral degrees. With this in mind, some of our universities are failing students because they insist on ignoring the experiential knowledge of veterans that served overseas and gained insight into both the destruction of landscapes and reconstruction of urban centers which suffered from catastrophic situations. Working in Latin America and the Pacific-Asian Region of the world in the second half of the twentieth century, Lynch provided both applied and theoretical designs which exist in this book and I recommend it for those interested in geography, landscape architecture, regional planning, and urban development.

Michael Southworth and Tridib Banerjee, former students of Kevin Lynch at MIT's School of Urban Studies and Planning, have organized a brilliant collection of most of Lynch's works. Here we can find his seminal ideas pointed out trough his researches in the field of environmental perception, as well as his urban design projects. The book still presents a good biography of Lynch and serves as a very interesting complement to the books that this fundamental author wrote. It is an extremely important work both to architectural and urban design students as well as to professionals and researches.

Through his experience and observation, Lynch reminds us that the most important component of a city -the reason why they are built- are its inhabitants.

User results do not match the author's results.

This book is designed for the reader, using Lightroom 5, to perform prescribed editing changes to sample images provided by Adobe Creative Team. The idea is that if the reader or user of Lightroom 5 follows these editing instructions on the provided sample images, they will achieve the same or nearly the same results with their Lightroom 5 as the writer of the Classroom in a Book achieved. The results couldn't be farther from the truth. Even with professionally calibrated dual digital displays, my results were completely and noticeably different from that of the author. I tried using a different computer with Lightroom 5 installed with exactly the same results. I could find no support for this problem from Adobe's Website support pages. For this reason, I found the interactive portion of this publication to be useless. And since the primary instructional value of this book is in the interactive use of the supplied sample images in accordance with the author's instructions and his expected results, I find this publication to be of little value.

Not useful for the ACE exam.

I bought this book in order to study for the Adobe Certified Expert exam, and this book was not useful. The level of the exam is far superior compared to what this book teaches. So, do not waste your money here. If you are a beginner, get Scott Kelby's book, if you are a more advanced user, you probably will not find anything new here.
This book was a waste of money.

UPDATE (MAY/2014): I just got the results of my ACE exam and I passed, but my opinion remains. This book (at least this LR5 edition) is not useful!

This book was written by experts at Adobe, who have no idea of what the user needs. I found this book useless and full of technical terms that I have no idea about what they are saying. I am stuck on the FIRST lesson.

Roger R. Hock received his Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego and is currently the Director of the Psychology Program at Mendocino College in northern California. This is like a cookbook on design patterns. I used the word cookbook because, it covers the important aspects of design patterns for beginners and interview preparation.

This book first covers the design patterns and followed by design patterns interview questions.

For the design problems discussed in this book are useful for the people who are appearing for interviews.

The problems discussed are real-time problems (for example, chat server implementation) and thorough enough to get the idea of what kind of questions to expect in these kind of questions.

A huge disappointment. I am returning it back.

This book is a joke on people who shell out close to $40 to buy it.
Its language is bad, its text is confusing, and its organization is hectic.
The code examples authors provide are very artificial and uninspiring at best, and on nightmarish side at worst, when they for some reason decide to give a C++ example (a language they clearly learned years ago in a college class and never used in real life).
Their proposed solutions to design interview questions they provide would have ended a job interview in any firm I used to work for.

It pains me to think that they market this book "for beginners" - the most vulnerable segment.
If you are in the beginning of your journey to become a competent software engineer you should read these books instead:
- Applying UML and Patterns by Craig Larman ( [...] ) - this one is the must, and the best one I know
- Head First Design Patterns ( [...] ) - good for beginners, lot of pictures and jokes.
- And possibly try to read Design Patterns Explained ( [...] ) - I've read it a long time ago, and don't remember details about it, except that it was a good read and made design patterns concept clear for me.

About the Author
Patrick McCarthy is one of the few foreigners to actually teach karate-do in Japan. Moreover, he is recognized worldwide as one of the foremost authorities on the civil fighting traditions of Okinawa. So, this is my 3rd Bubishi purchase. Well, 4th. But my 3rd as translated and presented by Mr. McCarthy.

I got this one for two reasons: that sweet new cover, and the additional material presented in addition to the Bubishi itself.

At the price, it's worth it alone for Mr. Andreas Quast's excellent history of the tome.

I'd go on and on about why a 'serious karate-ka' or whatever should own it, or how it can give insight into the ur-methods of kata design and technical interpretation (and the training methods which spring from such understanding), and a dozen other things.

But I won't.

If you have a copy, it's not going to enhance your martial art more than the previous edition. But it will give you more insight into the material, the journey it's been on, and an idea about the people that first walked that road.

If you don't have a copy, this one is a lower price than I paid for the last one, so it's a deal.
