Fort Anderson was the largest interior fortification guarding Wilmington, NC, the Confederacy's most important city by late 1864. Beginning in March 1862, Confederate engineers built massive earthen batteries mounting large seacoast cannons at Brunswick Point, the site of the colonial port town of Brunswick, located halfway between Wilmington and the mouth of the river. In February 1865, Union forces advanced on Wilmington by way of Fort Anderson. General Grant had ordered them to capture the city in order to assist General Sherman's Carolinas Campaign. A combined operation against Fort Anderson lasted from Feb. 17-19, 1865. The fate of the Confederacy hung in the balance.

Buy and read before you visit Fort Anderson!!!!

Several years ago when Dr. Fonvielle’s first account of Fort Anderson (Fort Anderson: Battle for Wilmington, 1999) rolled off the presses I thought “Well, this should be the final word on the subject.” so well presented was his account. Gladly, I was wrong! In the years since the author, the preeminent scholar of the Civil War in the Lower Cape Fear, has uncovered more facts, stories and lore about this fascinating site and its connection with the fall of Wilmington in February 1865. As Fort Fisher had been neglected by Civil War historians for decades Fort Anderson’s story was sadly even more so. To fully understand the significance of Fort Anderson one needs a thorough overview of its connection with the abandoned colonial town of Brunswick, its strategic position in the Confederate defense system of the Lower Cape Fear, and the military personalities in both armies who crossed paths and swords at this locale in the closing weeks of the war. The author does all of this and does it superbly!

Any Civil War historian could give an account of Fort Anderson but no one, and I mean NO ONE, could do it with the fervent interest Dr. Fonvielle has for his subject. His half-century long passion and enthusiasm for the topic is evident on each and every page. Fort Anderson is somewhat seen as the ‘red headed stepchild’ of Fort Fisher but this latest account finally allows this fortification to stand upon its own merits.

As with Dr. Fonvielle’s previous accounts this volume is presented in a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing manner in type that is a delight for us older readers and lavishly illustrated so that the reader can literally visualize being at Fort Anderson in the smoke, fire and chaos that hastened the fall of the city of Wilmington in February 1865- which sealed the fate of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.

If you have never visited Fort Anderson- buy the book, read it and then visit the excellently preserved earthworks and you will understand why this historic site is one of the jewels in the crown of the Lower Cape Fear.

A Wonderful History of the Lower Cape Fear

Dr. Fonvielle has created another wonderful history of the Lower Cape Fear Area. His Foundation and History of the Fort Anderson area in the early 1700s sets the stage of need for additional defense for the Port of Wilmington. The original photographs and maps along with later created maps with high degree of description are a great asset to this book. In my opinion this History could only be told by a person such as the Author who grew up near the Fort's area and has studied and researched it his entire life. As a History Buff, I like to visit and stand on a Historical Site and with the Story and Images put myself into the Notable Times. The present day images and maps along with war time ones within allow me and any visitor to do just that. I highly recommend this book to all levels of Historians. I give it a Five Star Rating, it deserves much higher.

Wilmington's Civil War History

The author has practically produced a brand new work, in what originally started out as an update for the older publication "Fort Anderson: The Battle for Wilmington" This book is substantial..... in size, depth and story. Again, Dr. Fonvielle and NC Starburst Press have teamed up to produce another beautiful volume, full of period images, modern photography, artifacts, and incredible maps detailing just about every improvement ever made to the fortress during its wartime construction. The fort was always being added to and improved, just like the author has done to his book. The fascinating history of the riverside location is detailed from start to finish. What began as a colonial port town, its sacking by the Spanish, abandonment, new life as a Confederate earthen fort, to it's ultimate and hopefully final transformation into State Historic Site, Fort Anderson/Brunswick Town finally has a complete history in written form. Fort Anderson guarded the back door to Wilmington, NC and until recent times, has been ignored in the written word. Fonvielle is an excellent technical researcher, fishing and digging for details in all places and has the dual gift of being able to write these facts and figures into a form that suits both the casual reader and the Civil War historian wanting every particular.

The author has done a monumental job tracking down images of people, soldiers, and others that have left their footprints at the fort. I would have to guess that most of these have never been published.

The book itself is a true treasure and a beautiful work. Visually appealing and well put together with many nice touches. Another keeper on my bookshelf!

Three words...

I have three words to describe the book. Credulous, fatuous and appalling. I will expand each of these in turn. SPOILER ALERT!! To review this book I will reveal important events in the book. Some readers may wish to skip this review if one plans to read "The Shack". The book opens with an introduction where the author claims to have been told this story first hand by his long time friend, Mack, the protagonist. This is I believe presented as a factual account, not a plot device. This seems credulous as the story which follows is extremely fantastic. For me it has no creditability. The plot of the book is Mack and his family taking a vacation at a lakeside camp ground in Oregon. Mack's six year old daughter, Missy, is abducted and murdered, presumably raped. Three years later Mack finds a note in his mailbox inviting him to return to the shack, the scene of the murder. This note is from "Papa", Mack's wife's moniker for god. Mack decides to accept the invitation. He arrives shack to find it not a decrepit hunting cabin, but a fully livable home. Also although it is deep in a Oregon forest, in the dead of winter, the property, about an acer, is in full, riotous summertime bloom. Mack is greeted at the cabin door by a black woman clearly modeled on clich�s of an antebellum black nanny. This woman turns out to be god! (one would think this gender shifting sinful) Jesus is there, a mid-eastern carpenter/handyman, (very creative) and the holy spirit is a ephemeral Asian woman, all nicely PC. The he/she god bustles around the kitchen making pies, whipping up piles of greens and veggies. They tree live together in perfect domestic tranquility and can share a good family laugh when Jesus drops a bowl of pancake batter. All this seems rather fatuous. It is also curious that Papa created this bubble of lush, bountiful bloom, all the food is homegrown, just for Mack but neglects to provide bountiful crops for say, drought ravaged areas of Africa. This seems a shabby use of divine power. After a meal one evening Jesus and Mack set out for a walk, the point of which is to talk about Missy's death privately. Jesus assures Mack he was with Missy the whole time and that Missy prayed for her family and was, "very brave", which he offers to the grieving father as spurious comfort. This is appalling! Here is Jesus, supposedly god incarnate riding along with an abducted child, which knows will be murdered, likely raped, and does nothing to save her! What human man would in such a situation not try to save the child? All Jesus does is ride along. But then he did nothing about the Inquisition, witch craze, sordid church corruption... so what is one child? This is where I have stopped reading. I'm uncertain if I'll toss this book into the closet unfinished or try to endure to the end.

Especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, but doesn't replace actual disciplined study of the bible

This is an allegory about the nature of God and His relationship to Man, similar in kind to “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. As with all allegories, it can enlighten truths in a short paragraph that may not be understood in a long chapter of theology. Unfortunately, allegories also have the weakness of being like a “graphic novel” compared to a true novel, simplifying or paraphrasing original material (in this case, the Bible) to the point of distortion.

Things I Liked:
- The depiction of the Trinity as a joyful internal relationship of love, which God desires to share with us.
- The deep love of God for Man (with love manifest differently through each of the Trinity), full of sacrifice and joy, without condemnation.
- A reasonably engaging plot to explore the topics.

Things I Didn’t Like:
- The “romping” good humor of the Trinity for each other and Man was over the top for me. There was no room for “Fear of the Lord” in this story, at all.
- No real iscussion of hell, except to say God wants us all to be with Him.
- Some minor eco-babble, man-bashing, use of the math concept of “fractals”, etc. were annoying.
- Some, mostly minor, points of theology were just wrong in my opinion.

I think this book would be especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, or for those that carry anger/resentments for wrongs done to them. So, this book can take its place with other recent Christian-pop books like “Wild at Heart” and “A Purpose-Driven Life” that have proven meaningful to some. Just don’t make the mistake that it replaces more disciplined study of the scriptures and serious books of theology that illuminate a greater portion of the Word. If asked to defend your faith, or wondering yourself wht the scriptures say about a topic, you can’t say, “I read something about that in ‘The Shack!’” On the other hand, allegories are the equivalent to parables, and we know Someone that was pretty effective in using those to teach deep concepts through illustrations.

Gut wrenching storyline

Spoiler alert: A lot of people really love this book. It was well written & the author went into great detail to explain his perception of God. If you believe in an invisible force that contains pure love, does not judge & only wants your love in return, then this book is for you. It seems I am not there yet. I could not get past the death of an innocent child at the hands of a serial killer even though the main character is released from the great sadness of losing his previous child by forgiving her killer. I was depressed for days after reading this story. I understand the concept that forgiveness can release victims from the negative emotional attachment to their agressors. Maybe if I also had the experience of actually meeting God in his three forms in person, I too would come to understand more fully the meaning of unconditional love. In the meantime, I will continue living my life by being as kind as I can be to all I meet. However, if I were to meet anyone abusing a child, I might just feel the need to kick them in their private area, then call the police.

About the Author Denis Hickey grew up in a family headed by strong, loving women who provided him with a sound basis to write this book. He ran his first business at twenty-six and retired at forty-eight to backpack around the world and write. In between he raised a fun family with a wonderful woman and two lovely daughters, Shannon and Chimene. In business he learned entrepreneurial skills in Silicon Valley and worked with companies on the leading edge of five different technologies. Later he co-founded the crisis management firm, Hickey & Hill. Denis lives in Warsaw, Poland, with his second wife, Malgosia, and son, Sean, pursuing his passion for writing and striving to achieve a mellow satisfaction in life.

A chorus of fatalism, stoic bravery and black, black humor is sounded in this haunting oral history of the 1986 nuclear reactor catastrophe in what is now northeastern Ukraine. Russian journalist Alexievich records a wide array of voices: a woman who clings to her irradiated, dying husband though nurses warn her "that's not a person anymore, that's a nuclear reactor"; a hunter dispatched to evacuated villages to exterminate the household pets; soldiers sent in to clean up the mess, bitter at the callous, incompetent Soviet authorities who "flung us there, like sand on the reactor," but accepting their lot as a test of manhood; an idealistic nuclear engineer whose faith in communism is shattered. And there are the local peasants who take this latest in a long line of disasters in stride, filtering back to their homes to harvest their contaminated potatoes, shrugging that if they survived the Germans, they'll survive radiation. Alexievich shapes these testimonies into novelistic "monologues" that convey a vivid portrait of late-Communist malaise, in which bullying party bosses, paranoid propaganda and chaotic mobilizations are resisted with bleak sarcasm ("It wasn't milk, it was a radioactive byproduct"), mournful philosophizing ("[t]he mechanism of evil will work under conditions of apocalypse") and lots of vodka. The result is an indelible X-ray of the Russian soul.

-- I'll get down on my knees to beg you--please, find our Anna Sushko. She lived in our village. In Kozhushki. Her name is Anna Sushko. I'll tell you how she looked, and you'll type it up. She has a hump, and she was mute from birth. She lived by herself. She was sixty. During the time of the transfer they put her in an ambulance and drove her off somewhere. She never learned to read, so we never got any letters from her. The lonely and the sick were put in special places. They hid them. But no one knows where…. The whole village took care of her, like she was a little girl.

Unlike most recent Nobel Prize winners, Svetlana Alexievich writes simply and directly, without any tricks of style, and the emotion she distills is heartbreaking. For these words are not her own, but those of survivors of the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, faithfully transcribed by her down to the silences, tears, and hesitations, and lucidly translated by Keith Gessen. Start at the beginning, or open to any page, and you will find yourself drawn into these poor people's lives: townspeople who go out on their balconies to watch the unusual colors of the reactor fire, farmers forced to leave their crops and cattle, soldiers and firemen drafted in with inadequate protection to clean up the mess. It is very easy to read, and unbearably human. Or starkly human and eventually unbearable to read, because the stories of stolen lives are told in their raw form and never let up.

The book is framed by two longish sections headed "A Solitary Human Voice," the accounts of widows, newlyweds and very much in love, seeing their husbands come back and basically rot before their eyes. It continues with monologues, dialogues, choruses, the voices of soldiers, resettlers, children, all meticulously attributed with their real names. There is tragedy, of course, and even more pathos. One returning soldier burns all his clothing except for his army cap which is coveted by his little boy; two years later, the child is dead of a brain tumor. One woman smuggles out her radioactive cat in a suitcase. Another goes to see her doctor:

-- "Sweety," I say, "my legs don't move. The joints hurt." "You need to give up your cow, grandma. The milk's poisoned." "Oh, no," I say, "my legs hurt, my knees hurt, but I won't give up the cow. She feeds me."

There is rumor and superstition here, but much genuine faith; ignorance and a strange kind of poetry. Bewilderment is only the other side of the coin to a previous belief in the stability of the simple life; sorrow is the obverse of love. The light of the disaster illuminates the lives of ordinary people; I could well believe that this is a better portrait of the Russian soul than any number of novels. There are even touches of characteristic black humor:

-- There was a Ukrainian woman at the market selling big red apples. "Come get your apples! Chernobyl apples!" Someone told her not to advertise that, no one will buy them. "Don't worry," she says. "They buy them anyway. Some need them for their mother-in-law, some for their boss."

One man tried to write about his experiences. "I sent the story to a journal. They wrote back saying that this wasn't a work of literature, but the description of a nightmare." Which makes me ask the question of Alexievich herself: a nighmare certainly, but is this literature as we know it? It felt more like the raw materials waiting to be made into literature by someone else. Being a theatrical person myself, I kept on wondering how I might select from those monologues and choruses to put them on the stage, set them to music perhaps, at any rate do something to give them shape and overall meaning. The author divides her book into three major sections: The Land of the Dead, The Land of the Living, and Amazed by Sadness. But the texture of the narratives is much the same in each; there is no obvious structural arc, no particular reason why you should continue to subject yourself to such a succession of tales of woe. But perhaps I would be wrong to try to force these stories into a shape that has some meaning. They HAVE no meaning, no larger redemptive purpose. And that is her point.

Keith Gessen, the translator, opens with an introduction giving some of the facts and dates of the disaster. But with the exception of a brief preface, Alexievich herself does not. In her equally brief closing section, In Place of an Epilogue, she explains why, and also why she feels the subject is so urgent: because living in a country with 350 atomic bombs, the threat of nuclear holocaust is all too real. Let me end my review, therefore, with her own voice after reading so many others:

-- I often thought that the simple fact, the mechanical fact, is no closer to the truth than a vague feeling, rumor, vision. Why repeat the facts--they cover up our feelings. The development of these feelings, the spilling of these feelings past the facts, is what fascinated me. I try to find them, collect them, protect them. These people had already seen what for everyone else is still unknown. I felt like I was recording the future.

A PIECE OF HISTORY THAT WE CANT AND WONT FORGET.

This book was a great emotional rollercoaster. I have studied and read many books and articles on the subject of Chernobyl, but now I can see and feel the emotions of the people that lived it. No, I take that back, I can just slightly feel and see...these people went through more pain and anguish than any person should ever go through. What a testament to a generation that doesn't seem to grasp the concept of fear. They don't fear anything but their government. They "fear the state more than the atom". What a great book...everyone should read this. It makes your problems seem very small in comparison. There is nothing I didn't like about this book. This literature flows into your soul and then steals your breath and comes out again and leaves you feeling sadness and empathy. We need to be careful in the future with what we are doing to nature and Earth. Its our home...our only logical one, anyway. Excellent. Just bravo.

Breathtaking!

Alexievich was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature. I was compelled to read one of her texts. I settled on the Voices of Chernobyl. This book is a collection of Chernobyl survivors's interviews. This ongoing tragedy is momentous. The first story is almost too painful to read because we empathize with this young and naive wife who slowly watches her husband die over 14 days, and the last story is also about a young wife who watched her husband slowly die over years. All members of society have voices in this collection. While I was reading this book, I thought and wondered about the survivors, and I knew that most, or probably all, are dead. The ramifications of this accident will last for decades, centuries, and probably millennia. This book is not for the faint of heart.

Mediocre introduction to music theory

I bought this as a short and sweet introduction to music theory. Often, because of the K.I.S.S. principle, shorter books can be less confusing than much longer ones. Not so in this case. A clearer book could have been written in the same number of pages.

Although this did help me learn some of the basics, it left me with far too many unanswered questions. I still don't understand what it means to play a song in a particular key. There are so many notes in a song, how do I know which one(s) determines the key of the song? Although David Harp discusses playing in different keys, he never actually explains how you tell what key the song is being played in.

I haven't read either of them yet, but based on the ratings you may be better off with Edly's Music Theory for Practical People or The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory.

Update: Since originally writing this review I have read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory", and it is a far better--but far longer--book than this one. It also comes with an ear training CD. I now have no unanswered questions. (The note that a song ends on is usually the key of the song because the song resolves itself on that note. Also, the music notation tells you what key the song is in.) To help learn to read sheet music, I very highly recommend these sheet music flashcards.

This book helped me understand music theory, thereby improving my music playing and appreciation. The factor that I enjoyed the most about this book is how it can appeal to beginners as well as advanced musicians. He explains everything very clearly. I enjoyed reading this book.

About the Author
LELAND H. HEMMING is a member of the technical staff of the Signature Development and Applications Group, Phantom Works, a design and development division of the Boeing Company located in Mesa, Arizona. He obtained a BS in physics from San Diego State University in 1963 and an MBA from National University, San Diego, California, in 1977. He has been an active member of the IEEE since 1963 and a Senior Life member since 2001. He is also the author of Architectural Electromagnetic Shielding Handbook.
