Online News: Journalism and the Internet, by Stuart Allan

"If the promises of online news are to be fulfilled, books like this deserve the widest possible readership"
Paul Bradshaw, University of Central England, UK

In this exciting and timely book Stuart Allan provides a wide-ranging analysis of online news. He offers important insights into key debates concerning the ways in which journalism is evolving on the internet, devoting particular attention to the factors influencing its development. Using a diverse range of examples, he shows how the forms, practices and epistemologies of online news are gradually becoming conventionalized, and assesses the implications for journalism’s future.

The rise of online news is examined with regard to the reporting of a series of major news events. Topics include coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing, the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, the September 11 attacks, election campaigns, and the war in Iraq. The emergence of blogging is traced with an eye to its impact on journalism as a profession. The participatory journalism of news sites such as Indymedia, OhmyNews, and Wikinews is explored, as is the citizen journalist reporting of the South Asian tsunami, London bombings and Hurricane Katrina. In each instance, the uses of new technologies – from digital cameras to mobile telephones and beyond – are shown to shape journalistic innovation, often in surprising ways.

This book is essential reading for students, researchers and journalists.

A CRITIQUE OF (PRE-JOHN MACARTHUR) "LORDSHIP SALVATION"
By Steven H Propp
Charles Ryrie (born 1925) is a theologian who served as professor of systematic theology and dean of doctoral studies at Dallas Theological Seminary until 1983.

He says, "That a Christian can be characterized as carnal cannot be denied, simply because the text of 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 says there were carnal believers at Corinth. Paul addresses these people as 'brethren' and 'babes in Christ.'" (Pg. 30-31)

He summarizes that one need not believe in Christ's second coming in order to be saved; or receive Him as your present intercessor; "But I do need to believe that He died for my sins and rose triumphant over sin and death. I do not need to settle issues that belong to Christian living in order to be saved... I do not need to be willing to give up smoking in order to be saved. Matters of carnality, spirituality, fruit-bearing, and backsliding relate to the Christian life, not to the issue of salvation." (Pg. 40)

He addresses the "lordship" position that a "moment of failure" does not make one not a "disciple," and he then asks whether TWO moments would; "Or a week of defection, or a month, or a year? Or two? How serious a failure and for how long before we must conclude that such a person was in fact not saved?" (Pg. 48) He asks whether a Christian worker on a college campus should insist that a collegian break off an immoral relationship before he/she receives Christ; "In the meantime is that person born again?" (Pg. 49)

Ryrie's book---particularly its frequent illustrations---is an effective presentation of the "non-lordship" view. (For a contrary view, see John MacArthur's The Gospel According to Jesus: What Is Authentic Faith?)

Excellent, short and to the point book on Salvation
By Spineman
Excellent, short and to the point book on Salvation. Written in response to John MacArthur's, Lordship Salvation doctrine, Ryrie does a masterful job of supporting the simple Gospel message, Believe and be saved! This is not a new conflict. Legalism has always been the battleground. Adding works or continual repentance as a requirement for salvation steals the security and then the joy of our salvation. Much of this confusion arises from the use of the word repentance where in the original translation, metanoia , "changing one's mind" would be a more accurate translation.
From Wiki "Metanoia, a transliteration of the Greek μετάνοια, is usually translated as repentance, for example in The King James Version of the bible, and the verbal cognate metanoeo/μετανοέω is translated to repent. Translating metanoia as repentance has been deemed "an utter mistranslation."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metanoia_%28theology%29
Understanding the difference of the repentance of a believer to the repentance of an unsaved person goes a long way toward explaining the confusion. I was once told by a very wise Christian mentor that once you are saved all Satan has left is to make you doubt your salvation so that you will not be anxious to tell others. Salvation without assurance is Salvation without joy.

Focusing on 'day one competencies', this book offers essential guidance to the most common problems encountered in small animal general practice. Addressing 100 core scenarios, it is ideal for the undergraduate or newly qualified vet, and for those seeking an up-to-date refresher. Organized by presenting sign (diarrhoea, itching) or disease (diabetes mellitus, pancreatitis), and with colour illustration throughout, each chapter explains:

  • how to make a diagnosis
  • which interventions are most appropriate in general practice
  • what the vet should say to the client before and after examination

The authors also offer invaluable advice on other key topics such as annual health checks, neutering and euthanasia, and they tackle the tough questions: What if it doesn't get better? What is the low cost option? When should I refer?

Never before has so much practical information been brought together in a single volume. Like having an experienced or specialist clinician standing by your side in the consulting room, 100 Top Consultations will become a trusted companion for students and practitioners alike.

Review of 100 Top Consultations in Small Animal General Practice, by Hill, Warman, Shawcross .
By Kyle Wendy Skultety, LVT
Review of 100 Top Consultations in Small Animal General Practice, by Hill, Warman, Shawcross .

I would like to thank publishers Wiley-Blackwell for providing me with this review copy.

As the title says, this book elaborates on the top 100 problems seen by veterinarians. The table of contents is color coded, and broken down according to specific conditions, differential diagnosis, and miscellaneous.
Each specific problem is covered in 4-6 pages of information, with clear and concise sections. Headings include: Etiology and Pathogenesis, History and Clinical Signs, Important DDX, Specific Diagnostic Techniques, Treament, "what if it doesn't get better", The Low-Cost Option, and "when should I refer?". Full color photographs accompany many of the chapters.

The language is easy to understand for practitioners of any level. The book is by no means all-inclusive, but it just provides a quick overview of the problems that vets will see most often.

There is a very small section on exotic pets (one case each on a rabbit, tortoise, hamster, guinea pig and pig) and another small section on canine behavioral issues. Lacking is a section on feline behavior issues, which I thought was unacceptable. Cats certainly can present with aggression or other behavioral problems. On the whole, dogs seem to be over-represented, however, I'm not sure if it is because they are brought to the veterinarian more often or that some treatments (such as for hot spots, conjunctivitis, etc) can be utilized with both canine and feline patients.

On the whole, I think this is a book that would be a good choice for new graduates, or vets who have a small non-referral practice. Even veterinary technicians will benefit from reading this, as they are likely to see these cases in the hospital regularly. The price is inexpensive enough to make this an easy addition to your library.

He has also served as a guest lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and most recently at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Hewitt recently retired from teaching at the City College of San Francisco and at San Francisco's world-famous science museum, the Exploratorium.

John Suchocki received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1987 from Virginia Commonwealth University, where his research focused on the isolation and characterization of natural products. After a two year post-doc in medicinal chemistry/pharmacology at the Medical College of Virginia, John became a visiting assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he began working with his uncle, Paul Hewitt, on "Conceptual Physical Science," After a couple of years at the Manoa campus, John transferred to and eventually received tenure from Leeward Community College, one of the University of Hawaii's community colleges. At Leeward CC, his research efforts turned to chemical education, with particular emphasis on liberal arts chemistry courses and distance learning technology. After a decade in Hawaii, John relocated to Vermont with his wife and three children, where he now teaches liberal arts chemistry at Saint Michael's College. Concurrent to his writingand teaching careers, John is also the writer of "Conceptual Chemistry," now in its Second Edition, and a producer of multimedia content for science education, including his "Conceptual Chemistry Alive!" CD-ROM series. Leslie Hewitt, a former teacher at Westlake Elementary School in Daly City, CA, received her B.A. in Geology from San Francisco State University.

Math Lite? Hello, Check the Title!
By Kelly Fitzpatrick
I have seen several scathing reviews here, based on the fact this text is not Math Intensive; but that is exactly the point of the book! I can teach kids who previously had little interest in the sciences and none in Physics, and suck 'em right on in to the beauty of understanding how the world works. We can then progress to other resources for "Problem Solving".

I agree that by itself, this is not adequate preparation for the AP Exams. It does, however, provide the framework for understanding what we are working toward, and getting the attention of the non- "Math-head" students, so they can see some point to the science. Since many, many adolescents have a hard time applying themselves to subject matter which seems purely theoretical, this an invaulable service.

I believe every student should start with Conceptual Physics. Every educated person should have some basic understanding of these ideas, even if he or she is a (gasp!) Liberal Arts type. Those who wish to pursue engineering, obviously, should then progress further, with a more mathematically challenging follow-on text.

Experiential !!
By Lisa May
Great book for people of any age on how our world works! As an accredited Mary Wanless "Ride With Your Mind" coach, the sections on Mechanics (inertia, action, reaction, mass, momentum, kinetic energy, gravity...) and on Wave theory (resonance, interference) are a great help in explaining to people the rational laws of the interface between human & horse in horseback riding (a field with many illogical traditions)!
