The Great Charles Dickens Scandal, by Michael Slater

Charles Dickens was regarded as the great proponent of hearth and home in Victorian Britain, but in 1858 this image was nearly shattered. With the breakup of his marriage that year, rumors of a scandalous relationship he may have conducted with the young actress Ellen "Nelly" Ternan flourished. For the remaining twelve years of his life, Dickens managed to contain the gossip. After his death, surviving family members did the same. But when the author's last living son died in 1934, there was no one to discourage rampant speculation. Dramatic revelations came from every corner—over Nelly's role as Dickens's mistress, their clandestine meetings, and even about his possibly fathering an illegitimate child by her.

This book presents the most complete account of the scandal and ensuing cover-up ever published. Drawing on the author's letters and other archival sources not previously available, Dickens scholar Michael Slater investigates what Dickens did or may have done, then traces the way the scandal was elaborated over succeeding generations. Slater shows how various writers concocted outlandish yet plausible theories while newspapers and book publishers vied for sensational revelations. With its tale of intrigue and acast of well-known figures from Thackeray and Shaw to Orwell and Edmund Wilson, this engaging book will delight not only Dickens fans but also readers who appreciate tales of mystery, cover-up, and clever detection.

The Great Charles Dickens Scandal is a short book about Dickens long relationship with Ellen Ternan his mistress
By C. M Mills
A few years ago this reviewer read Michael Slater's biography of Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Slater is one of the greatest Dickens scholars in the world. Slater is the Emeritus Professor of Victorian Literature at Birkbeck University of London. He is lectured on Dickens and written many books on the great Boz.
In "The Great Dickens Scandal" Slater presents a careful study of the affair Dickens engaged in with Ellen Ternan. Dickens was the father of 10 children married to Catherine Hogarth Dickens. Mrs. Dickens was fat and over 40 when the dashing Dickens acted in a Manchester 1857 theatrical production of "The Frozen Deep" penned by Wilkie Collins the author's close friend. Ellen was blond, bright, witty and had a lovely figure. She was in the acting profession along with her actress mother Florence. She had two siblings Fanny (who married Tom Trollope, novelist Anthony's brother) and Mamie. Dickens may have fathered a child by Ellen but whether the baby died at birth is up for speculation. Ellen may have given birth in France. Dickens kept up his relationship with her until his death in 1870. She may have been the thirteenth person preent at his internment at Westminster Abbey. She and Dickens were passengers on the wrecked Staplehurst train wreck on June 9, 1865 five years to the day prior to the author's death on June 9, 1870.
This book is a dry examination of the evidence on Dickens and Ellen's life culled from memoirs of the author's children, friends and literary scholars. Slater is to be commended for his outstanding research. However, the book would most appeal to Dickens scholars or someone very familiar with the life and works of Charles Dickens.

Another well-written and well-balanced study of Charles Dickens and Nellie Ternan
By Margarette Maranto
As always, Michael Slater maintains a non-judgmental stance, meticulously including all available and pertinent data on the question of Dickens's relationship to the actress, Ellen Ternan, in his finaly fifteen years of life. Slater's famous sense of humor is not always on display, but he accomplishes his goat of laying out the facts and letting the reader decide for himself. A must for those curious to know all there is to know about Nellie and Charles.

A Study of What We May Never Know about Dickens
By Glynn Young
In 1858, during the production of a play written by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, Dckens met the veteran actress Frances Ternan and her two daughters, Maria and Ellen. That same year, he announced that he and his wife Catherine were separating, which was something of a sensation in Victorian Britain, involving as it did the most popular writer in the English language and a man associated with family values.

For the next 12 years, until his death in 1870, Dickens maintained a relationship with young Ellen Ternan. Exactly what that relationship was has never been truly determined, but it spawned a minor research industry that continues through today.

That research industry is the subject of Michael Slater’s “The Great Charles Dickens Scandal,” and it may tell us more about the generations that followed Dickens than it does about the man himself.

It’s a fascinating book.

Slater, Professor Emeritus of Victorian Literature and Fellow of Birkbeck College at the University of London, is well positioned to tackle the subject. His doctorate at Oxford was on Dickens’ The Chimes. He’s written an acclaimed biography of Dickens. He’s written several books on aspects of Dickens’ life and times, including Dickens on America and Americans (1970), “Dickens and Women” (1983), “The Genius of Dickens” (2011), and “Douglas Jerrold 1803-1857” (2002). He’s a past president of the International Dickens Fellowship and editor of its journal, The Dickensian. And he’s served as trustee and president of the Charles Dickens Museum in London.

The man knows his Dickens. What he explores in “The Great Charles Dickens Scandal” is what can never ultimately be known about Dickens and Ellen Ternan.

For decades after his death, Dickens’ children maintained something of an iron lock on what was written and known about their father. What began to break the story open was a novel published in 1929, entitled This Side Idolatry. It was written by a journalist for the Daily Express, Carl Eric Bechhofer Roberts, and what he tripped over in his research was the possibility, or likelihood, that Ellen Ternan caused the breakdown in Dickens’ marriage.

Slater moves decade by decade, describing additional investigatory work by biographers, journalists, defenders and prosecutors, involving significant names in Britain’s literary establishment (including G.K. Chesterton, who was a Dickens defender). By the 1970s, Ellen Ternan starting receiving her due, particularly as a result of the growing popularity of feminist studies. Peter Ackroyd, author of a mammoth biography of Dickens, argued that the relationship was platonic, given Dickens’ own attitudes toward young women (and there’s precious little proof to the contrary).

Slater looks at all of the decades of work and research, and concludes that “the smoking gun” to prove Dickens and Ternan were physical lovers will likely never be found.

But, oh, what lengths people have gone to in the attempt to prove one thing or another.

Berio's Sequenzas: Essays on Performance, Composition and AnalysisFrom Routledge

Between 1958 and 2002, Luciano Berio wrote fourteen pieces entitled Sequenza, along with several versions of the same work for different instruments, revisions of the original pieces and also the parallel Chemins series, where one of the Sequenzas is used as the basis for a new composition on a larger scale. The Sequenza series is one of the most remarkable achievements of the late twentieth century - a collection of virtuoso pieces that explores the capabilities of a solo instrument and its player, making extreme technical demands of the performer whilst developing the musical vocabulary of the instrument in compositions so assured and so distinctive that each piece both initiates and potentially exhausts the repertoire of a new genre. The Sequenzas have significantly influenced the development of composition for solo instruments and voice, and there is no comparable series of works in the output of any other composer. Series of pieces tend to be linked by the instruments for which the composer writes, but this is a series in which the pieces are linked instead by the variety of instruments for which Berio composed. The varied approaches taken by the contributors in discussing the pieces demonstrate the richness of this repertoire and the many levels on which Berio and these landmark compositions can be considered. Contributions are arranged under three main headings: Performance Issues; Berio's Compositional Process and Aesthetics; and Analytical Approaches.

'... contains much valuable, insightful commentary...' Studies in Musical Theatre '...the first serious contribution to the understanding of this very important part of Berio's compositional output...in addition to these specialist essays covering different aspects of confronting Berio's compositions and abounding in examples from the scores, statistical and graphical respresentation of the research results etc., the book offers an extensive bibliography on Berio and his work, listing of the editions of the Sequenza and the Chemins, a discography register and an index. As such, it surely represents a piece of inevitable literature for experts researching both Berio's work, and composition of the 20th century in general.' International Review of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music '... a number of musicological fields - solo performance studies, later 20th-century aesthetics, issues of the work-concept - are all the richer for this stimulating volume.' About the Author
Professor Subrata Bhattacharjee, known by his friends as Sooby, earned a B.Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1983 and his Ph.D. from Washington State University, Pullman, USA in 1988. After two years of post-doctoral work on a NASA project, he joined San Diego State University in 1991 and currently holds Professorship in Mechanical Engineering Department and Adjunct Professorship in Computer Science Department. Professor Bhattacharjee has been actively involved in research in radiation heat transfer, combustion, computational thermodynamics, and development of software for educational purposes. For his dissertation, he developed a modified two-flux method (Effective Angle Method) for calculating radiative source term and used this model to study two-way coupling between radiation and fluid dynamics in a laminar diffusion flame. Working on a project on jet flow in boundary layers, he came upon a new non-dimensional group that compares a known pressure drop with viscous forces. This number is being used in textbook and literature in connection with electronic cooling. Throughout his research career, Dr. Bhattacharjee has been interested in uncovering the mechanism of flame spread over solid fuels, especially in a microgravity environment. His work helped establish the dominance of radiation heat transfer in near quiescent environment. He has been a PI and co-PI of several projects funded by NASA. Some of his contributions include: 1. Discovery of the phenomenon that flame over thick fuel bed in a quiescent microgravity environment self-extinguishes irrespective of the oxygen level; 2. Development of a formula for a critical thickness that renders a fuel thick in such an environment; 3. Development of two formulas for flame spread rate, one in the thin limit and one in the thick limit, which are the only flame spread formulas ever developed in the microgravity regime. Several of his experiments on flames over solids have been conducted aboard NASA's Space Shuttles, Sounding Rockets, and Russia's Mir Space Station. One of his recently proposed experiments is currently under design to be conducted in the International Space Station. Under a current grant from NASA, Prof. Bhattacharjee and his team is building a 10 m tall Flame Tower at SDSU to conduct some fundamental experiments to predict the behavior of flames in a gravity free environment of a spacecraft. These ground based work is in support of the proposed space based experiment. In this work, researchers from Gifu University, Japan, are collaborating with SDSU. Supported by NSF, Dr. Bhattacharjee has been developing a novel cyber infrastructure for multi-scale approach to thermodynamic data and chemical equilibrium services. Users can now plug in these services and "outsource" the data used in their thermofluids calculations. By simply altering key words such as NASA, NIST, or AB-INITIO, for example, they can change the source of data used in their research applications. Likewise, equilibrium calculations can be integrated into any CFD code written in FORTRAN, MATLAB, or any other language through a relatively new technology called web services. The chemical equilibrium program developed by Dr. Bhattacharjee's group is equally powerful as NASA's benchmark CEA and offers a built-in parallel architecture. Prof. Bhattacharjee's passion for making thermodynamics easier to master led to the development of a web based software called TEST, the Expert System for thermodynamics (www.pearsonhighered.com/bhattacharjee), which has been used by students, professionals and educators from around the world. Several articles and one book have been written about the use of TEST in thermodynamic education. Winner of Outstanding Faculty Award, Monty Award at SDSU, Most Influential Faculty award, Faculty Friend Award, Outstanding Engineering Educator award, Best Paper award, and ASME Fellow award, Professor Bhattacharjee can be contacted at prof.bhattacharjee@gmail.com"

Everything That Rises Must Converge, by Flannery O'Connor

This collection of nine short stories by Flannery O'Connor was published posthumously in 1965. The flawed characters of each story are fully revealed in apocalyptic moments of conflict and violence that are presented with comic detachment.

The title story is a tragicomedy about social pride, racial bigotry, generational conflict, false liberalism, and filial dependence. The protagonist, Julian Chestny, is hypocritically disdainful of his mother's prejudices, but his smug selfishness is replaced with childish fear when she suffers a fatal stroke after being struck by a black woman she has insulted out of oblivious ignorance rather than malice.

Similarly, "The Comforts of Home" is about an intellectual son with an Oedipus complex. Driven by the voice of his dead father, the son accidentally kills his sentimental mother in an attempt to murder a harlot.

The other stories are "A View of the Woods", "Parker's Back", "The Enduring Chill", "Greenleaf", "The Lame Shall Enter First", "Revelation", and "Judgment Day".

Flannery O'Connor was working on Everything That Rises Must Converge at the time of her death. This collection is an exquisite legacy from a genius of the American short story, in which she scrutinizes territory familiar to her readers: race, faith, and morality. The stories encompass the comic and the tragic, the beautiful and the grotesque; each carries her highly individual stamp and could have been written by no one else.

One of the best in the genre
By Brian Carpenter
My copy of _Everything That Rises Must Converge_ has been shouting at me from high up on my bookshelf for several years now. I don't know when I picked up this book; in the dark ages, I suppose, back when I appreciated no book more than the Bible, and most books less than Louis L'Amour's _Sackett's Land_. But my book keeps yelling. "Hey ...!" it says. "I'm getting booklice up here! What are you reading that [book] for ...?"--Don't be too alarmed. All of O'Connor's books shout at readers that way.
Do you want to know something, though? The book has a pretty good reason to shout. Although it's been months since I finally read the collection, it hasn't quieted down. Moreover, I've grown appreciative of its company.
_Everything that Rises..._ was released after O'Connor's death. The hallmark story leads a parade of nine others, a veritable Mardi-Gras of intellectuals, petulants, vindictives, intolerants, and misconceivers, all down a path toward redemption, and thankfully, all with their shirts _on_ (except for that one guy with the tattoo, of course).
"Theology--ugh. Stop saying 'redemption'," some readers holler. Fortunately, O'Connor's theology is well-masked. In fact, I had to read her biography, look at her essays, and dig with a backhoe before I located any theology. But I found it. It was hiding there in plain sight, and once I saw it, I wondered that I had ever missed it. I had trouble locating her theology because O'Connor has a habit of flaying peoples' minds to reveal their darker side. And when you flay somebody's mind, well, to quote Lady Macbeth, "Who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?" Wait now--before you shout "Violence--ugh. Stop saying 'flay'," I need to tell you about her work.
O'Connor uses no words of mystery. That woman was club-thumping blunt. If you prefer stories that wash down pleasantly with watercress sandwiches and Darjeeling, then you'd better find your authors elsewhere. However, if you need something that brands your soul, and if you want the burn to last a long, long time, then read this collection.
O'Connor was passionate about two things in her life (well, three things actually, if you count large domesticated birds, but that's for another review): she loved her religion, and she loved the South. Her writing feels the effects of both. If the South provides the actual meat and potatoes of the story, then her Catholicism provides the salt, without which her stories truly might have been intolerable.

The South is not just a home for O'Connor. The south looms over her writing like a half-ton gorilla. But in a good way. Her region gives her work location, yes, but more importantly a sense of history, and of direction. She was fiercely unrepentant of her Southern heritage, at least in terms of its importance to her craft. Her collection of essays asserts that her Southern characters were grotesque because of their bad manners, yet to her, "bad manners are preferable to no manners at all."
Her work is equally tempered by her fierce Catholicism. In this age, where the church itself is virtually anathema, readers may be surprised that O'Connor attended Mass nearly every day of her life.
O'Connor is unrelenting in her work to provide situations of redemption and grace to broken people, and just in case the reader accidentally misses her point, she makes her characters very ugly and her redemptions--well, the only word to describe an O'Connor redemption is violent. O'Connor's God is not a bubbly, bearded Gnome who dances with pixies at lake's edge. _Her_ God whomps you on the head with a plank, because _someone_ hasn't been paying attention in Life 101. Pow! Redemption!
This concept may be difficult for Protestant readers, because we are often quick to identify grace as a gift from the God of mercy. We do well, therefore, to read this Catholic, who reminds us that grace is doled out by a God who is just. I guess I am telling you this because O'Connor's characters don't fall off cliff because it was determined that way--her characters fall because they are so fallen in the first place. They fall because of the inevitability of the character's nature. Humankind, in O'Connor's opinion, needs the occasional swift kick-in-the-pants to return them to a state of grace before God. Besides, is it not infinitely more pleasurable to watch the Coyote fall into the canyon when his hand-made Acme hang-glider collapses, than to endure the Care-Bears' fight against the bad, evil meanies, with the power of good?
Robert Fitzgerald assembled a 25-page introduction to this work. Despite its length, Fitzgerald's piece is probably the best biographical account on the market, and is certainly a useful look at the work it precedes. However, Fitzgerald, like too many writers of forewords, assumes too much knowledge of O'Connor's works on the part of the reader. He supposes we have heard of Taulkingham, or of Ruby Turpin, or Hazel Motes. We will not encounter these people in the present work, and the extra names and plot summaries only get in the way. Fitzgerald is dead, though, so I guess he won't be changing the introduction any time soon.
O'Connor's works are audacious and skilled. Occasionally, the reader can spot the thorns popping through the seams of some of the stories, due to her untimely death. It is evident to the reader that a few of these stories needed more rubbing and polishing. Yet, one by one, O'Connor's characters, depraved sons-of-guns one and all, limp through their metronome world until they are ultimately redeemed by their God. The intensity of reader's experience does not slacken until the last page.
I think this explains why _Everything that Rises Must Converge_ still shouts at me. And it will shout at you, to remind you that you are fallen, too--"Hey stupid! Put down your pen and read me again!"

O'Connor's Castigation of Bigots
By S. DEMILLE
What's the difference between a good and bad story? One will cause you to ponder its message long after you read it while the other will do nothing more than fill time. I did my share of pondering after reading each of Flannery's stories in this collection.
The stories, for the most part, take place in the rural South, where we hear the bleating of sheep, the snorting of pigs, and the mooing of cows. There is a narrow, but effective, variety of characters portrayed, from landowner to squatter, from black to white. The stories simmer with a religious flavor, and those who are religious seem to be either haughty and self-righteous or hopelessly naive. The religious bigots think their medicine is best and should be taken by everyone, while they themselves are really the ones "in need of a physician." The intellectuals weave throughout a story or two, and like some of the religious ones, they treat those around them with disdain and downright viciousness. The characters seldom remain unscathed, however. Divine justice usually swoops down and executes revenge upon them, either directly or indirectly. This revenge often tends toward the grotesque, and I often finished a story with my jaw hanging open. Now I can't wait to digest her complete collection.

"Floundering around in the thoughts of various unsavory characters."
By D. Cloyce Smith
For her first collection of stories ("A Good Man Is Hard to Find"), O'Connor gathered an assortment that had been previously published in magazines; the result was a fascinating, but unsystematic, potpourri of experimentation and originality. As she prepared the stories for "Everything That Rise Must Converge," however, she instead developed each selection under a thematic framework. (Only the last two stories, which were literally rushed to completion as she lay on her deathbed, seem to stand a bit apart.) The collection as a whole, even more than her previous fiction, emphasizes the absurdities and monstrosities of everyday life and the tension between the demands of the self and the mystery of the divine presence.

One of O'Connor's primary mentors for her approach to fiction was, surprisingly, James Joyce (and, specifically, "Dubliners"), and his influence is nowhere more obvious than in this book. In one story ("The Enduring Chill"), she pokes fun at Joyce's worldview in an exchange between an artist and a priest. She was surely alienated by Joyce's un-Catholic sentiments, but she acknowledged his influence in her essay "The Nature and Aim of Fiction": "The major difference between the novel as written in the eighteenth century and the novel as we usually find it today is the disappearance from it of the author. . . . By the time we get to James Joyce, the author is nowhere to be found in the book. The reader is on his own, floundering around in the thoughts of various unsavory characters."

"Unsavory characters" are, without doubt, O'Connor's specialty. Yet, is O'Connor effectively able to remove herself from her narratives? Do the stories in this collection succeed, as she intended, as a thematically linked sequence? And, aside from her stated literary goals, are these stories really that good?

Well, on the first two counts, the results are mixed. In spite of her intentions, O'Connor's presence crowds several of these stories. In "The Lame Shall Enter First" (my own favorite), a vague didacticism is obvious both in O'Connor's not-very-subtle manipulation of events and in the story's portrayals of the juvenile delinquent Rufus Johnson and his mentor Sheppard, a Good Samaritan wannabe. Yet O'Connor steps back just enough to allow the story itself to convey the depth of Sheppard's moral collapse. The less successful "Parker's Back" (one of the deathbed stories) concerns a "trailer trash" husband who, much to his wife's dismay, gets a tattoo of Jesus Christ inked on his back. It's one of O'Connor's more brilliant scenarios, but the psychological sermonizing of the omniscient narrator is a bit heavy-handed. The author is everywhere to be found in this story.

As for the collection's coherence: O'Connor moral vision is certainly more easily discernible in this book than in any of her previous works. But, like the "Lives of the Saints" she so cherished, O'Connor's hagiography of sinners, read back to back, occasionally suffers from a certain formulaic uniformity and predictability. Still, each story, enjoyed at random on its own, has the potential for being your "favorite O'Connor story"-and it's hard to find two readers who will agree on which stories in this collection are best. As a collection, then, it's a bit tame. Individually, however, the stories really are that good.

Throughout her career, O'Connor invented a gallery of memorable reprobates and unlikely prophets. Whether read separately or as a cycle, these nine stories add much to her unique legacy. And the collection will also help clear the air for readers (like me) who had always been enchanted by O'Connor's works of fiction but perplexed by critics who stress their theological and symbolic underpinnings.

The Holiday Murders, by Robert Gott

On Christmas Eve, 1943, the newly formed but undermanned Homicide division of the Melbourne police force is called to investigate the vicious double murder of a father and son. When Military Intelligence becomes involved, Homicide's Inspector Titus Lambert must unravel the personal from the political.

If only the killings had stopped at two. The police are desperate to come to grips with an extraordinary and disquieting upsurge of violence. For Constable Helen Lord, it is an opportunity to make her mark in a male-dominated world where she is patronised as a novelty. For Detective Joe Sable, the investigation forces a reassessment of his indifference to his Jewish heritage. Racing against the clock, the police uncover simmering tensions among secretive local Nazi sympathisers as a psychopathic fascist usurper makes his move.

The Holiday Murders explores a little-known and sometimes violent corner of Australian history, and finds oddly modern echoes in its paranoia, xenophobia, and ugly fervour.

Well enough written, but too gratuitously violent
By YarraGirl
I enjoyed the depiction of wartime Melbourne, and I liked the characters of the police officers. What I don't understand is why Gott needed to depict such gruesome crimes. I read crime novels for characterisation, but primarily for the mystery - who did it, why did they do it, will the protagonists catch them before they kill again? I don't like the suspicion that the author took delight in depicting murder in the most repellent and sickening way possible. When did writing murder mysteries become a contest for who has the most hideous crime? And why, if the action is flagging, did he need to throw in the old trope - sexual violence against women. The pornography of violence is all too common in 'hard-boiled' murder mysteries nowadays, and personally I don't like reading it. Now, Gott isn't graphic, but my imagination is all too able to fill in the gaps. Filling in the gaps was sickening. For that reason I lost interest half-way through and skimmed large parts of the novel. Hammett, Chandler, McDonald, Burke - really good mystery writers didn't need to use sickening violence to move the plot along. Gott's a good writer - he doesn't need to do so either.

`Titus Lambert had never been fond of Christmas.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
In Melbourne, on Christmas Eve in 1943, a young man and his father are found violently killed in their home. While the scene is staged as a murder and suicide, it doesn't take long for Inspector Titus Lambert to see realise that both men have been murdered. Inspector Lambert is a member of Melbourne's newly formed Homicide Division which is unfortunately undermanned as a consequence of the severe manpower shortage at this stage during World War II. Military Intelligence also becomes involved in the case - co-opting assistance from Inspector Lambert's offsider, Detective Joe Sable. With only part-time access to Detective Sable, Inspector Lambert calls on Constable Helen Lord to assist.

The novel is set between Christmas Eve 1943 and the early new year of 1944. Trying to solve the horrific murders of John and Xavier Quinn leads Lambert and his team through a Melbourne divided into wealthy and poor and into a dark space inhabited by anti-Semitism, racism, violence and hatred.
Aspects of this novel are factually based. A group known as the Australia First Movement (most active between 1936 to 1942), with its monthly magazine the Publicist, had moved beyond the literary figures it first attracted (including Xavier Herbert, Eleanor Dark and Miles Franklin) to Nazi sympathizers and vicious anti-Semitism.

As Joe Sable says:

`The Publicist costs sixpence. Sixpence. That was all you had to pay to be admitted into the realm of pure evil.' `The people who wrote this, and the people who read it, weren't thousands of miles away in Europe. They were here, in Melbourne.'

It's a sobering thought, and makes this a confronting read. I usually prefer my crime fiction with less of a basis in fact - it's more comfortable that way.
And within the brief period covered by this novel there are other murders and a number of violent acts. The tension increases as Lambert, Sable and Lord race against time to try to prevent more deaths. I found myself racing through this novel - both wanting to see justice done and wanting to learn more about the characters involved. There were a few twists and turns I didn't anticipate, and there's some history I want to explore.

`In the end, though, don't most investigations depend on the carelessness and stupidity of the perpetrators?'

Jennifer Cameron-Smith

When the trad publisher wins
By Amazon Customer
I heard a radio interview in which the author, having written a series of semi-humorous thrillers found this book, then in the same style, was returned by the publisher. Apparently the message was "take it seriously". The author did.
Here's the advantage of Kindle. I called up the book while the interview was still running and had it waiting for me and ready to read when the session was over!
I have since recommended it highly to my writing colleagues and also read star reviews in the dailies. For a non-Australian, even of my generation, the theme of the fascist Australia First movement, traitors during World War II, is probably unfamiliar, although it has attracted academic attention. Perhaps it's somewhat esoteric to a postwar generation (which is nearly everybody, now). But take it as a thriller, rather than a mystery, and it enthralls. There is no mystery in "who dunnit?" - just mounting horror and tension - but the denouement is a heart-stopping surprise. Read it and find out.

An Eye and Ear-opening Read
By Bill Noel
Mr. Jones has taken a new and socially-significant look at the birth of what many have now come to call jazz, ragtime, and the roots that have grown to become popular American music--roots that date back to South Carolina's Lowcountry, in general, and more specifically to Charleston and the Jenkins Orphanage. And better yet, the author has traced the history of "America's music" in an easily-readable and entertaining style, something that many of us non-historians will appreciate. If you have an interest in the black roots of American popular music, this book is a must. But, even more importantly, it gives an excellent overview of the good, bad, and tragic life and times of blacks in the United States in the late 1800s through World War II. I applaud Mr. Jones's success and highly recommend it.

An enjoyable historical look at the early intersection of African and Anglo music in Charleston and the development of jazz.
By Phil King
Once I started reading, I could hardly rest until I had made it to the back cover. I am currently reading it again just to be able to recall as much as I can on demand. It's a heart warming story of a good and dedicated man and his sincere concern for those most defenseless during a time of great hardship following the War Between the States. The life of Daniel Jenkins is a testament of what just one man can accomplish for the benefit of others and all with but a trace of outside assistance from the government.

An outstanding read.
By Mario Acevedo
The author Mark Jones loves the city of Charleston and he loves history. In this book he does a wonderful job weaving the evolution of American music and race relations, the rise of jazz, and the invention of the Charleston dance. Jones tells the story with appropriate humor and irony and doesn't gloss over the ugly racial attitudes of the times. This book is a remarkable achievement in research and storytelling and deserves to be in every historical library.

Review

"It was a pleasure to write the Foreword for such a well-written, informative book (Case Method: Entity Relationship Modelling ), I learned some new guidelines for entity relationship modelling when I read it over."

- Dr Carma McClure, Vice President of Research, Extended Intelligence Inc.

"Richard Barker has managed to encapsulate in book form (Case Method: Entity Relationship Modelling ) his many years of data modelling theory and practice. His new book comfortably achieves the seemingly impossible task of being both introductory and definitive at one and the same time."

- Russell Jones, Editor, Software Development Monitor

From the Inside Flap
PurposeThe purpose of this book is to provide data analysts, strategists and data administrators with a definitive guide to Entity Relationship Modelling. At the same time, I was very keen that the book should be well-thumbed by regular use, as opposed to sitting on someone's shelf.

I believe that a sound grasp of entity relationship modelling can provide a firm architectural framework for understanding a business and creating flexible systems for the future. There are, however, many things that need to be considered over a period of time to take advantage of these basic techniques.

Not least of these considerations is understanding the meaning of words as applied by our users and separately within the Information Systems department. It is certainly my experience that many system developments fail because of the use of jargon and protectionism within the ivory tower of the Information Systems department, coupled with the bewildering explosion of technology. In this book I am implicitly recommending that analysts must discard their egos, and instead recognize that there is strength in their Human fallibility. In practical terms it means seeking out the most thorough and accurate understanding of the business, and then exposing that to your users and peers so they can help you gain even more accuracy. I have seen this 'egoless' team approach not only enable teams to build far more appropriate systems but act as a catalyst, knitting together users, system development staff and even accountants.

How to Use This BookI hope this book will be used by novice and expert alike. It has, therefore, been designed to provide easy-reading, tutorial-like chapters and definitive reference chapters and appendices. Later chapters contain more complex examples and techniques to be used once you have mastered the basic techniques. A single example runs through the book, based on a hypothetical airline. However, other examples and common problems are provided to help minimize your learning curve.

The appendices are designed to cover other useful concepts, further detail quality checks, first-cut database design and data administration. All the important terms in the book are covered by the glossary and, finally, an extensive index and the contents list are there to provide alternative entry points to the information in the book.

This book should provide 'hot-line' support to your entity relationship modelling when that really key problem requires urgent resolution.

AcknowledgmentsWriting a book about something you have been doing for years sounds straightforward. I found myself going over projects and discussions from the last twenty years. It is really amazing what I have learnt from my colleagues in England and the United States, and especially from many of the users who kept insisting that we really must cater for yet another important exception.

Ensuring that the book itself is complete, consistent and coherent was a tedious but worthwhile task. I would like to thank my close colleagues who took the time to expose ambiguities, difficulty in understanding, errors and omissions. In particular I would like to say a special thank you to Barbara, my wife, with whom I have worked weekends and into the early hours whilst we struggled with definitions, style, diagrams and terminology.

The ONLY database design book you need (w/one exception)
By Scott SanFilippo
I don't know why there are not more reviews on this book. I read this book when I first started my 12-year career in the database industry. And to tell you the truth, there is only one other book I have ever needed (regarding database design) -- "The Data Warehouse Toolkit" (Kimball) -- only because Data Warehouse design is much different than the design theories in this book.
This book teaches you ways to design any database, and model any business -- what questions to ask users, what an entity really is, how you define it, how to tell a difference between an entity and an attribute, how to model relationships between entities, how to model "types" in a database. If you an learn the principles in this book, you will quickly become an expert in database design.
Buy this book -- you will not need another. And if you are building a data warehouse, buy this book first, so you understand the difference between OLTP design and data warehouse design.

Case * Methods: Task and Deliverables
By A Customer
I work in the Information Technology Section for the Department of Natural Resources. This review is for the book Case* Method: Tasks and Deliverables by Richard Barker ISBN 0-201-41697-2.
I have been using Richards book on Case Methodology for years as a guideline for project management and planning. There has been many methodologies introduce to the department through out the years, but we keep coming back to the concepts and tactics outlined in this book to help keep things organized and on track. I have found his concepts have proven themselves through time as a good template to follow. I am looking forward to reviewing your books Case*Method: Entity Relationship Modelling as well as Storage Area Networking Essentials.
Keep up the good work that has a timeless application and relevance.

Still packs the most punch in as few words as necessary
By WallStreetsInsane
This was also my first book in Data Modelling and though its been almost 10 years ago since I picked up my copy, I still have not seen many better on the shelves since in its category: intro to data modeling via ER diagraming (IE notation)
Though I no longer need to refer to this book any longer, it was certainly the first and best of the first books read in the subject and it speedily had me on my way to more advanced topics and eventually becoming an expert ER modeller.
I was so impressed by the book I eventually joined Oracle.. alas Barker had moved on but his case*method books haven't lost a step in so long a time..

Strider: The Story of a Horse, by Leo Tolstoy

Known worldwide for his masterpieces Anna Karenina and War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy takes a less dramatic but no less poignant approach in Strider: The Story of a Horse. Told from Strider’s own aged, equine perspective, the tale nonetheless addresses such perennial human concerns as prejudice, fortune, and mortality.
Tolstoy subtly illustrates the parallels and contrasts between horse and human, as we see through Strider’s eyes the decline of his most memorable owner—a rich, arrogant hussar officer in his youth and a depleted, decrepit figure in his dotage. Completed in Tolstoy’s own old age, Strider offers a compelling glimpse into the author’s growing obsession with mortality.
Published in 1885, the story idea first occurred to Tolstoy in 1856 and thus spans the two main periods of his writing career. Strider, of interest to general readers and students of Russian literature alike, offers considerably more than simply a story of a horse.
